Mechanized irrigation contributes significantly in Boro rice production of Bangladesh. A study was conducted in some selected villages of dinajpur and Panchagarh districts. The objective function was  to minimize the total annual cost for Shallow Tubewell (STW) and Deep Tbuewell (DTW) made up of fixed cost and variable cost. The comparative production cost for Boro rice production was determined using market price and historical operation data. The replacement policy for STW and DTW was carried out in field level for appraisal of most economical production.

1.To assess the economic bebefit of Shallow Tube well (STW) and Deep Tube well (DTW)

2.To assess  the filed level replacement policy of STW and DTW.

Collection of data: The study at analyzing financial profitability of data financial profitability of Shallow Tubewells (STW) and Deep Tubewell (DTW in two selected unions of Nowabgonj upazilla under Dinajpur district and Atwari upazilla under panchagarh district. The owner of each STW was selected for interview to collect relevant data for this work. Data were collected separately from owner of STW and DTW during 5th March to 18 th March, 2001. A semi-structured questionnaire was used for collection of data. The collected data was then compiled and analyzed for cost benefit analysis and replacement policies.Cost analysis: Costs of machinery operations always can be determined with good record keeping. Cost records are helpful for machinery managing purposes but the estimated costs of proposed machine or practice is the more frequent management problem. These estimations help in making decisions as to whether a new machine is affordable, whether it should be used to replace an existing practice, and whether the capacity of a current machine is noncompetitive with a new machine. Estimated costs are composed of expenses that occur independent of use, called fixed costs and consist of the loss in value of the machine because of aging, were or obsolescence, which is described by the term depreciation. Other fixed costs are charges for interest on the investment in the machine, taxes, insurance and a charge for shelter for the machine, if any. Those that occur because of use, called variable costs. Variable costs include the cost of labor, the cost of fuel energy, the cost of repair, and the maintenance costs associated with lubrication, sharpening etc.

Replacement Policies: Farm machines like any other machine need replacement because of accidents, because they are obsolete, because they on longer have the capacity needs of an expanded farm, or because a new design has a superior has a superior material efficiency. The more common replacement decision is to replace a worn existing machine with a new one to continue the same area usage and to gain a sense of increased relibility for the field operations. The replacement decision depends on the analysis of a continuing record of actual R&M expenditures and a realistic evaluation of the current market value of the current machine. Fuel, labor cost, oil and other consumables used are expected to be the same for the new machine as for the old and need not be considered in the replacement decision. Such costs are an important part of production expense and should be recorded and examined for other management decisions. Economic replacement occurs when the accumulated depreciation and R&M costs per unit of machine use fall to a minimum. Continued use of the machine after that point will cause increased costs. The data are obtained from R&M cost records and machinery marketplace values. The machinery manager's replacement decision is based on the last line of the record sheet, the average accumulated cost. The high costs during the first few years are due to the high cost of actual depreciation. Only by keeping the machine operating for several years will these costs be reduced to reasonable values. If the accumulated costs continue to drop each year, the machine should not be repaced.

Irrigation by shallow tubewell (STW) and deep tubewell (DTW) play vital roles for increasing agricultural production. To extract better and efficient service of shallow tubewell (STW) and deep tubewell (DTW) operators need to be equipped with proper knowledge of operation. Proper planning and institutional patronization is needed to develop manpower for servicing and maintenance of shallow tubewell and deep tubewell. Cost analysis shows that STW operation is economical upto 6th year. After 6th year DTW operation costs decreases rapidly but STW cost increases.Field level appraisal for replacement policy of shallow tubewell average accumulated cost were 925, 630, 536, 445, 400, 358, 364 TK/ha for 1,2,3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 year. After 6 year the repair and maintenance cost increased highly so at the end of 6 year shallow tubewell should be replaced. The average accumulated cost for deep tubewell were 3176, 2422, 1949.33, 1590.1323, 1136, 1181, 895, 807, 743, 682, 633, 592, 557, 528, 506, 519, 471, 459, 459, 459, 460 Tk/ha for 1 to 20 year respectively. At the end of 19 years, the repair and maintenance cost increased highly, as a resuld total cost increased and benefit was decreased. So the economic life of deep well is found to be 19 years. This study shows that DTW operation is costlier to STW operation upto 6th year. So, it the ground water availability is not a constraints STW operation is beneficial and recommended for operations.
