The purpose of the study was to identify the value chain of mangoes along with post-harvest losses in different stages of the chain in Bangladesh. The major actors of post-harvest produce value chain of mangoes were identified as Producer, Mohajon/Bairal, Foria, Arotder, Bepari, Wholesaler and Local/Supermarket. The major value addition in the post harvest fresh produce chain of mangoes were Mohajon/Bairal 46%, Foria 4%, storage at Arotder level 16%, Bepari 16%, city/district Wholesaler 7%, Local/supermarket level 11%. The major post-harvest losses of mango value chain from farmer to local market due to improper handling, transportation and grading, packaging and storage. The losses found at Mohajon, Foria, Arotder, Bepari, Wholeseler and Local/Supermarket were found 11%, 1%, 5%, 3%,12% and 2%, respectively. Total average loss was found as much as 34%. Of the losses, damages of mango occurred due to impact bruising (5%), sap burn (11%), dropped tango (5%). The total loss due to physical damages from producer to consumer was about 21%. The losses due to post-harvest pathological diseases were found as anthracnose (16%), stem end rot (7%), transit rot (2%) and dendritic spot (2%). The total loss due to post harvesl pathological diseases from producer to consumer was about 27% loss of mangoes is reduced through intervention of appropriate technologies during transportation and storage, the country may save about TK 200 cores in a year. Losses at Mohajon and wholesaler level can be minimized by using appropriate technology like plastic baskets during transportation and storage period.

1. To identify the value chain of mangoes in Bangladesh.

2. To identify the damages occur in different stages of value chain in Bangladesh.

3. To determine the post-harvest losses of mangoes in different stages of value chain in Bangladesh.

The present study was based on field survey where primary data were collected systematically by means of an interview schedule from individual actor. The study area was selected based on large scale production of mangoes. The selected study area was Sibgonj of Chapainawabgonj district for interviewing mango producers, intermediaries, local arotdar, transport agencies, and Kawron Bazar of Dhaka city for interviewing city wholesalers and retailers etc. The draft interview schedule was prepared according to the objectives of the study with active consultation with the key informants, expert from the relevant fields and secondary information. The draft schedule was pre-tested and necessary corrections, modifications and alterations were made accordingly and printed for field data collection. The interview was conducted in the selected area for collecting information. Data were collected through personal interview during May 25 to July 07, 2009. Before taking interview, the whole purpose of the study was clearly explained to the respondents. Initially many of the responded used to be doubtful to answer the questions. When they were assured that the study was purely on academic one and was not likely to have an adverse effect on them, they hied to make good co-operation. Information was also collected from farmers to consumer's level in this study, the actors of the value chain of mango were identified and the incidence of post-harvest losses and damages were also determined throughout the chain using a combination of pre-designed structured questionnaires and written comments provided by produce managers and test of sample of damages produce. In each stages of uploading & the damaged, mangoes were weighted. From the weight of good mangoes obtained after sorting the losses in percent due to handling transportation and storage were estimated.

The conclusions were made based on the objectives, field observations, results and interpretations of field survey data: The major actors of post-harvest fresh produce value chain of mangoes were identified as Farmer, Mohajon/Bairal, Foria, Arotder, Bepari, wholesaler, Retailer and Supermarket. The value additions in the post harvest fresh produce value chain of mangoes were Mohajon/Bairal 46%, Foria 4%, storage at Arotder level 16%, Bepari 16%, city/district wholesaler 7%, Local/Supermarket 11%. The levels of intermediatories in the value chain are large in number Reduction in number of intermediatories between producers and consumers may ensure higher level of benefits to Producer's level of the losses, damages of mango occurred due to impact bruising (5%), sap burn (11%), dropped mango (5%), anthracnose (16%), stem end rot (7), transit rot (2%) dendritic spot (2%). The total loss due to damages from producer to consumer was about 42%. The losses due to damage are very high mechanical aids, technologies and practices can improve the situation. The major post-harvest losses of mango value chain from farmer to local market due to improper handling, transportation and grading, packaging and storage. The losses found at Mohajon, Foria, Arotder, Bepari, Wholesaler, Local Supermarket were found 11%, 1%, 5%, 3%, 12% and 2%, respectively. Total average loss was found as much as 34%. appropriate and modern post-harvest handling packaging and storage technologies need to be introduced to improve the post-harvest losses of mangoes in the country.
