Performance Study of a Two-wheel Tractor

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The performance of a power-tiller was studied under different field conditions. Tests were done for a length of 25 m in the field and the data recorded were forward speed, fuel consumption, tillage depth, and soil moisture content. The data thus recorded were applied to determine energy and labour consumptions in small-sized plots ranging from 0.25 ha to 4 ha of different shapes. The results reveal that the fuel consumption rate (l/h) is affected by forward speed, tiller speed, soil strength and tillage depth. The fuel efficiency is better at forward speeds up to 3.0 m/s irrespective of tillage depth. Two-wheel tractors are extensively labour consuming. The energy and time requirement are not significantly affected by field shape but are direct functions of field size. Two-wheel tractors might be considered economical over four-wheel tractors for small and fragmented holdings.

Objectives:

To study the performance of a two-wheel tractor, from the perspective of fuel consumption, fuel efficiency, labour consumption, time consumption, quality of tillage, etc.,

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted in summer-fallow stubble field for a test length of 25 m for different tillage depths and forward speeds. For each test run, fuel consumption, time consumption and tillage depth were recorded. To get rid of the influence of the acceleration due to gravity the next run was given at the adjoining strip. For final calculation, the average of the two was used. A calibration curve of fuel consumption rate viz power output at the PTO was drawn for different throttle settings. From the calibration curve, the power output at different fuel consumption rates during the field testes was calculated. The turning time for the two-wheel tractor was 5 s/turn.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of field tests show that both the fuel consumption rate (l/h) and the fuel consumption per ha (l/ha) are direct functions of the forward speed and depth of tillage. For all depths, the fuel efficiency was best up to 0.3 m/s forward speed. Field shape has insignificant or no affect on total time consumption or energy consumption to work a certain soil. Finally, two-wheel tractors may be considered economical for small and fragmented holdings in the rice growing countries of Asia.
