Lntensity of Tillage Operation in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Shortage of power and uncertainty of the climatic conditions in Bangladesh limit the farmers' ability to prepare land at the optimum moisture content of soil and at the optimum time available. Too early or too late rain disturbs the timeliness of various tilling operations. This results in a low productivity per unit of land. Whereas, to meet the increasing demand of food and fibre of the country, cropping intensity should be increased substantially. This goal can be best achieved by intensifying the tillage operations from the present average level of approximately 152% to 167% throughout the dry and wet seasons using the modern farming technologies.

Objectives:

To intensity the tillage operations both in dry and wet soil conditions in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The main purposes of tillage operations are: to increase soil fertility, to destroy the harmful materials, to circulate air freely and to retain the moisture content in the soil for successful crop production. Tillage operations can be grouped into primary and secondary tillage. Primary tillage operation includes opening the furrow at a depth of 10-22 cm, invert the soil slices and to burry the weeds and plant residues under soil. For getting quality land preparation and higher yield it is better to till the land between September to October rather in December if the conditions of soils permit. Primary tillage operations are followed by secondary tillage operations to break up clods and to prepare land suitable for sowing of seeds. These operations are accomplished by three phases - one of them is conducted at the beginning of April and November. The second phase begins after 10-15 days of the first and third phase begins 3-5 days before sowing of seeds. The nature of tillage operations depends mostly upon the types of crops grown and their growing period. The technological systems of crop production are divided, generally, into three phases - tilling period, vegetation period and harvesting period. Ploughing, harrowing, manuring, etc are done during tilling period which are followed by sowing and planting operations. The calendar of technological systems of crop production in Bangladesh. Tillage operations in Bangladesh are accomplished in dry and wet soil conditions. For these operations active and passive tillage implements are used. Rotary tiller with horizontal drum are very popular in Bangladesh for puddling operations. About 30 to 35% of the total rice area of Bangladesh are cultivated by rotary cultivator sub-merged under 7 to 10 cm of water. About 65 to 70% land for jute, sugarcane, broadcast aus and aman rice cultivation are prepared in dry soil condition with the help of passive tillage implements.A list of foreign-made tillage machinery popular in Bangladesh.

Achievement/Findings:

The present conditions, yields of food grains amounts to 1.9 t/ha annually. This requires an additional cropped area of about 7.10 million ha and a total of 14.20 million ha by the year 1986-87. Whereas in the past decade (1974-84) the average net cropped area, area of land utilization and intensity of tillage operations were 8.52 million ha, 12.92 million ha and about 152% respectively. Hence, the only possible way to make Bangladesh self-sufficient in food production by 1986-87 is to increase intensity of land utilization and tillage operations to approximately 167%. This will surely require modernization of some agricultural operations.
