Development of Base Population in Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Sixteen selected high yielding local and exotic hybrids were grown in the field and random mated at BARI, Joydebpur during rabi 2009-10 for the development of source populations in maize. Based on yield, earliness and dwarf type plants two sets of bulk populations were made for (i) high yield goal and (ii) early and dwarfness. These two populations will be grown separately in the next coming season. Undesirable plants will be discarded and desirable plants will be random mated for years.

Methodology:

Sixteen selected top yielding local and exotic hybrids viz. Pacific 11, Pacific 60, Pacific 747, Pacific 759, Pacific 984, NK 40, NK 46, 900 M, 900 M Gold, Pinacle, Wang 11, Pioneer V 92, Shampan, BARI hybrid maize 7, BARI hybrid maize 9 and Uttaron 2 (local and exotic hybrids cultivating in the country) were used for this study. Equal quantity seeds of each hybrid (50 seeds/variety) was mixed and planted in small field for random mating. Seeds were sown on 12 December, 2009 at BARI, Joydebpur. Fertilizers were applied @ 250,120,120, 40, 5 and 1 kg/ha of N, P₂Os, K₂O, S, Zn and B, respectively and standard agronomic practices were followed to raise good crop. During plant growth any undesirable character or weak plant was rouged out whenever seen. Important characters for rouging were like too week, too tall or short and after flowering, the traits like high ear height, exposed cob, leafy cob, etc. At flowering time pollen were collected from the good plants and were bulked to pollinate early and medium statured plants. Before doing this work silks of selected plants were covered with silk bag. At maturity, only good looking, long and robust cobs with attractive grain color were collected. Finally, selection based on earliness and medium statured plants along with yield, two groups of ears were separated and stored for second cycle. These random mating and selection for desirable character and discarding undesirable plants will be continued for several cycles. Desirable new genotypes will be added to the group after each year’s of selection.After few generation of improvement, the base population will be tested for accumulation of genes with high GCA/SCA using appropriate designs like, Half Diallel, NCD I or NCD II. If enough progress is made, a part of the population will be used for development of inbred lines through selfing.

At flowering time 200 selected desirable strong and vigorous disease free plants were pollinated with bulk pollen. After maturity the pollinated ears harvested and finally two groups of selected ears were separated each contained 65 ears with two main objectives: (i) short duration and dwarf plants and (ii) high yield goal.
