Study on Productive and Reproductive Performance of Different Genotypes of Dairy Cattle

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Baghabari under Sirajganj district of Bangladesh is highly promising area for the development of dairy industry contributing a lot to the national demand of milk. To set up a profitable dairy industry in this location, selection of a potential genotype of dairy cattle is a prerequisite. So, emphasis was given to undertake a study to compare the productive and reproductive performance of different genotypes of dairy cattle. The farmers and animals were selected randomly. The data regarding productive and reproductive parameters were recorded in data recording sheet and analysed accordingly. The highest average body weight, average daily milk yield, lactation length and lactation yield were found in H-F cross followed by Jersey cross, Sindhi cross, Shahiwal cross and Pabna subsequently. The age at first heat, average age at 1st calving and postpartum heat period were the lowest for H-F cross and highest for Pabna cattle. The service per conception was the lowest for Pabna and highest for H-F cross and it was vice versa in case of gestation length and mean birth weight of calves. On the other hand, the lowest calving interval was found in Sindhi and the highest in Jersey cross.

Objectives:

1. To compare the productive and reproductive performance of different genotypes of dairy cattle, and

2. To select a potential genotype of dairy cattle for setting up a profitable dairy industry.

Methodology:

The farmers and the animals were selected randomly. The number of Holstein-Friesian (HF) cross, Jersey cross, Sindhi cross, Shahiwal cross and Pabna were 184, 64, 50, 78 and 59, respectively. The farmers selected were advised to follow the same management practices for their animals. The data regarding productive and reproductive parameters were recorded in data recording sheet. The data were collected and brought to BLRI headquarters. Finally, the data collected were analysed by General Linear Model (GLM) univariate procedure in SPSS computer programm

Achievement/Findings:

The present study revealed that among all the existing genotypes of dairy cattle in Baghabari milk shed area, H-F cross still performed better than all other genotypes in case of major productive and reproductive performances.
