A Comparative Study on the Quality of Paddy Seed Stored in Different Storage Structure

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This paper presents the experimental results on storage of paddy stored in four types of structure (steel drum, plastic drum, dole and gunny bag). Temperature, moisture content, relative humidity, insect infestation, 1000 grain mass and seed viability were recorded during the five months of storage period. The study was conducted in the FMPHT division with BR-22 paddy in April, 2002. The seed were stored at 11.2% moisture content. Moisture content ranged from 11.2 to 12.3% for steel drum, 11.2 to 11.3% for plastic drum, 11.2 to 12.3% for dole and 11.2 to 13.2% for gunny bag. The germination capacity ranged from 96 to 94% in steel drum, no change in germination was observed in plastic drum (96%), 96% to 84% in dole and 96 to 70% in gunny bag. Initial store temperature was 32% and relative humidity was 81% (high), as a result, the level of insect infestation was greater with the increased temperature. The average grain mass temperature was observed less than the ambient temperature, only in dole it was higher in fifth month. The study indicated that steel drum and plastic drum may be used for storage of paddy seed for more than 5 months without much deterioration of seed viability and quality.

Objectives:

To observe the seed quality in terms of germination capacity, moisture content, weight loss and insect infestation stored in different types of structures.

Methodology:

Steel drum, plastic drum, dole and gunny bag bought from the market and three months old BR- 22 paddy was collected from BRRI central store for this study. The storage experiment was set up at the post-harvest laboratory in the last week of April, 2002. Paddy, BR-22 was loaded to each of the structures namely steel drum, plastic drum, dole made of woven split bamboo and plastered with cowdung, and two standard gunny bags. These storage structures were placed on the wooden dunnage inside the post-harvest Laboratory building of BRRI. The amount of paddy stored in steel steel plastic drum, dole and gunny bag were 126, 75.4, 196 and 120 kg respectively. Samples from each structure were collected on monthly interval by a sampler. In order to monitor the grain mass temperature, thermocouple of digital thermometer push vertically in the bulk grain mass of each storage structure. The thermo couple probe were recorded every month during the time of collection samples. Grain samples were collected by pushing sampler vertically in each structure to measure moisture content, insect infestation, 1000 grain mass and germination capacity. Samples were collected from 3 locations of each structure and then mixed. Moisture content by moisture meter. Sample collected from each structure was weighted and spread in a dish to count the number of insects present in the sample and counted insects converted into number of insect per kg. A hundred grains were randomly selected for measurement of germination capacity. Each reading was replicated three times to get average value at each interval for each structure. Each hundred seed soaked in water for 24 hours, and then placed on petridish lined with filter. All petridish covered with cloth and keep in room temperature. The filter paper was moistured every day with fresh water to facilitate germination. The number of germinated seeds after 7 days was recorded as the germination percentage. Ambient air humidity was measured by a hygrometer. For measurement of 1000 grains mass, 100 randomly selected grains were weighed in a digital precision balance at an interval of 1 month and this weight was multiplied by 10.

Achievement/Findings:

Plastic drum and steel drum can be used for storage of paddy seed for more than five months without deterioration of seed viability. However, the satisfactory level of seeds viability of gunny bag (above 80%) was up lo four months.
