Effect of Bio-fertilizer (planterra) on Soil Properties and Chemical Composition of Green Manuring Crops

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Leguminous plants such as Bogamedeloa, Crotalaria, Priotropies, Mimosa etc. harbour a large number of nitrogen fixing bacteria in their roots and thereby enrich the soil with available nitrogen as well as with azotomicrobes. Planterra is a commercial organic liquid-soil-inoculant comprising numerous strains of nitrogen fixing microbes and regarded as non toxic and ecologically harmless soil balancer. It is reported that planterra is more economic and effective than other synthetic fertilizer to rejuvenate the soil without fertilizer. Therefore an investigation was carried out to study the effect of planterra on the growth and chemical constituents of green crops. Planterra was sprayed in aqueous solution @ 0.1 gallon/acre on the soil after 15 days of seed sowing of green crops. Samples of green crops were collected at monthly interval. Yield data were recorded by taking dry weight of the materials and the materials were analysed for nitrogen, potash and phosphoric acid. The analytical data showed that the planterra treated plots yielded much higher amounts of different green manuring crops that the non-fertilized plots. The level of nitrogen, potash and phosphorus were higher and the dry weight of green crops of treated plots was more than those of non-treated plots.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in factorial RCBD with 6 treatments in 4 replications from 1978-83 in BTRI. Seeds of green crops like Bogamedeloa (Tephrosia candida), Crotalaria (Crotalaria anagyroides) and Mimosa (Mimosa invisa) were sown in the experimental plots. After 15 days of seed sowing, planterra was sprayed in aqueous solution @ 0.1 gallon/acre on the soil. Samples of green crops were collected at monthly interval. Yield data were recorded by taking dry weight of the materials and the materials were analysed for nitrogen, potash and phosphoric acid.
