Improvement of Rice Husk Briquette Technology in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey was conducted to identify the problems of rice husk briquette (RHB) Technology in Bangladesh and results were used to improve the system. The research was based on the primary data and these were collected through a survey in different districts of Bangladesh. The main problems were; excess energy consumption, tack of skill operators, frequent damage of screw, damage of main bearing, unavailability of heating coil, lack of skill mechanics, exhaust gas, and damp husk. Fifty-eight percent of rice mill owners reported for an improved (pre-heating of husk, exhaust system, cooling system etc.) RHB machine. It was also found that 60-70% energy consumed in die heating. Main bearing was damaged due to lack of cooling system. The life of screw was varied 8- l0 hours. It was also found that more than 8070 operators suffering from irritation in skin, eye and throat due to smoke. All RHB machine owners reported for damp husk that caused many problems; briquette did not bond properly, machine jammed, more energy consumption, screw damaged, more smoke, and decreased production rate. Therefore, pre-heating of husk and exhaust system were designed and developed to improve the system. Objectives:

To identify the problems of RHB technology in Bangladesh and developed an improved machine.

Methodology:

Technical survey was conducted in different districts of Bangladesh namely Dhaka, Khulna, Sylhet, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Dinajpur, and Mymensingh to identify the problems of RHB technology in Bangladesh. The study areas were selected based on availability of machines that were collected from the literatures, BIT (1998). Problems related to RHB technology were identified by asking rice mill owners, RHB machine owners, operator, machine manufacturers, briquette traders and users with a structural interview.The questionnaire was pre-tested on l0 respondents at Mymensingh district between l0-21 February 2002. After necessary corrections, additions, and modifications of questionnaire, the final survey was done in the study areas. After finishing the survey, local units were converted into standard units. All answers were coded and entered into excel program to analyze according to the objectives of.the. study. Pre-heating of husk and exhaust systems were designed developed and tested. The exhaust gas was used to preheat the husk. For cost analysis of the machine, depreciation cost was calculated with straight-line method. The salvage value of the machine and interest rate on investment were- considered as 5% and 10% of purchase value respectively. However others parameters such as cost of machine, screw life, screw repairing cost, energy consumption, price of husk, rate of labor, etc were collected from respective persons during survey.

Achievement/Findings:

The performance of pre-heating and exhaust systems will be examined thoroughly in coming days. The advantage of pre-heating and exhaust systems will be demonstrated rice mill's owners and manufacturers. Training will be conducted for mechanics and operator to repair and maintenance of the machine. Finally, a workshop will be conducted to disseminate the finding in different organization and personnel. Number of new techniques that were using in different machines in different areas was identified through survey. The advantage of those techniques might be examined through a research program and results might be disseminated in whole over the country through an extension program.
