Effect of Planterra and Sulphate of Ammonia on the Yield of Tea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Traditionally sulphate of ammonia (SOA) is used in tea as source of nitrogen and sulphur which are the indispensible elements for the synthesis of protein. Constant use of SOA for years may reduce the soil pH by liberating sulphuric acid and also may destroy the clay minerals like ellites by removing easily removable potassium. High soil acidity may also denature the protoplasm opf the roots of a plant resulting into death. An experiment was carried out to study the comparative effect of planterra and sulphate of ammonia on the yield of tea from 1978-83. Both the doses of SOA and planterra had increased the yield over the control but planterra @ 4 lit/ac had increased yield over the SOA @ 16 lb N/ac.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at Bilascherra Experimental Farm of BTRI from 1978-83. It was RBD with 4 replications. The treatments were: T₁= Control; T₂= Sulphate of ammonia @ 16 lb N/ac and T₃= Planterra @ 4 lit/ac. The fertilizers were applied as aqueous spray and data were recorded regularly.

Achievement/Findings:

The results showed that both the doses of SOA and planterra had increased the yield over the control but planterra @ 4 lit/ac had increased yield over the SOA @ 16 lb N/ac.
