Seed drying technology is the crying need of the farmer for post harvest and processing of farm produce specially paddy seed in Bangladesh. The country has been experienced tremendous shortage of quality rice seeds. Popularization of the BRRI seed dryer through farm level evaluation was undertaken for the resource poor farmers at the selected sites of Bangladesh. The selected field sites were Sreepur, Stung, Maria, Bahagali, Rachdia under Gazipur, Hobigonj, Bogra, Rangpur and Barisal districts, respectively, covering different regions of the country. Dryer was evaluated in these districts in Boro season, May to June, 2002. Viability of dried seed was monitored till December 2002. Initially it was 78-87% immediately after the test. Finally it was found more than 90% after six months of storage. The farmers were satisfied on the performance of the dryer. More than sixty eight percent farmers were motivated to hire the dryer during Boro and Aus seasons. Thus, demonstrations and farm level evaluations of BRRI seed dryer would aware and motivate the farmers on adopting the dryer resulting in increased rice seed production and reduced post harvest losses.

To determine the popularizing BRRI seed dryer in Bangladesh

BRRI seed dryer was developed in BRRI with the cooperation of IRRI to adopt in it Bangladesh. The capacity of the dryer was as high as 250 kg per batch. The BRRI seed dryer consists of one rice husk stove, two bins, one suction pipe with temperature controller and an electric blower. Three-inch blower was run by 220 volt electric line and required 330 watt. The dryer requires small spaces and possible to store by folding and easy to transport. This dryer can be used in adverse weather and can be operated by women. The BRRI seed dryer machine was installed under the shed of plain floor to escape from the rain. The inner and outer bin was set up on the jute or plastic mat to avoid moisture migration from the floor. Bin connector was set on the inner bin as such that there was no gap between them. Blower was set on the bin connector. Afterwards suction pipe coupled with connector into the blower inlet. Rice husk stove kept under the suction pipe. The space between the inner and outer bin was adjusted in such a way that the entire paddy was filled around the bin uniformly and up to bin connector level. Ash out let of the rice husk stove was covered by paper during rice husk feeding and rice husk stove was ignited and the switch of the blower was put on. Temperature indicator and rice husk stove was monitored time to time during the whole drying process. The rice husk was procured from the rubber roll huller mill. Generally this was coarser than that of angle bar huller mill and better for burning in the rice husk stove. Grain temperature (?) and relative humidity (%) were recorded and monitored by thermo couple, Hobo data logger and through dial temperature reader respectively. Except one (Vozon) all the variety of paddy dried in the BRRI dryer was developed from BRRI such as BR 6, BR 16, BRRI dhan 28 and BRRI dhan 29. Dryer was tested in Boro season, May to June, 2002. The moisture content of the paddy was determined by the Kett moisture meter in percent. But the rural farmer tested their paddy by teeth, foot, palm of the hand etc. Paddy samples were collected and rested after drying the seed by the BRRI seed dryer for viability test according to the standard protocol for about eight months. The "resource poor" farmers were selected on the basis of households who owned not more dhan 0.4 ha of land, had seven months requirement of rice and spent 100 days in working on others land. The selected field sites were Sreepur, Stung, Maria, Bahagali, Rachdia under Gazipur, Hobiganj, Bogra, Rangpur and Barisal districts, respectively, covering different regions of the country. The adoption decision of a person or a decision-making unit occurs through engagement of persuasion through demonstration, newspaper, radio, TV and publications etc. Demonstrations and farm level evaluation were arranged for the selected farmers at the selected sites to have practical experience through observation and participation in drying operation of the BRRI seed dryer. Farmer's opinion was recorded after demonstration and seed dryer through a structured questionnaire.
