Comparative Effect of Bio-fertilizers and Nitrogenous Chemical Fertilizers on the Growth of Young Tea Raised from Vegetative Cuttings

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Comparative efficacy of bio-fertilizer (Azotobacter- Azotobacter inoculum) as bacterial fertilizer and sulphate of ammonia (SOA) as conventional chemical fertilizer on the growth of young tea and replenishment of tea soil was assessed in BTRI from 1979-80. Azotobacter and SOA was applied respectively once and twice in the span of two years of experiment. It was observed that Azotobacter has beneficial effect on the growth and yield of young tea and on the enrichment of organic matter and nitrogen content of tea soils.

Objectives:

To explore the possible use of bio-fertilizer as a source of nitrogen to tea instead of chemical fertilizer

Methodology:

A trial with clone BT2 was laid out in BTRI under RCBD with 4 treatments and 5 replications. Each replication consisted of 24 plants. The experimental plots were treated with organic matter @ 2 tons/ac as usual practice. The treatments included T₁= Control, T₂= SOA @ 16 lbs N/ac, T₃= SOA @ 32 lbs N/ac and T₄= Bacterial inoculam containing Azotobacter @ 5 g/plant. SOA was applied once in every year as per recommended doses for young tea and bacterial inoculums was applied once during the entire period of study. The experiment was continued for two years. Yield data was recorded by weighing plucked tea leaves during the plucking seasons. Soil samples were drawn at monthly intervals of the 2^nd year at a depth of 0-9. Six such sets of soils were analysed for organic carbon and total nitrogen. Organic carbon was determined by wet digestion method of Walkey and Black and total nitrogen by Kjeldahl method according to C.S Piper.

Achievement/Findings:

The results showed that the plots receiving bacterial inoculum gave higher yield than the plots receiving SOA and the control plots. Soil analysis also revealed that the organic carbon and nitrogen contents in the plots receiving bacterial fertilizer were higher than those in the other treatments. However, it is too early to make firm comment on the possible use of bacterial fertilizer in tea.
