Comparative Yield Trial of Imported and Local Hybrids of Maize (2011-12)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study assessed genotype × environment interaction and stability for grain yield, days to tasseling, days to silking, plant height and ear height with thirty two hybrids across four different locations of Bangladesh during 2011-2. The AMMI model (additive main effects and multiplicative interaction) was used to analyze the genotype-environment interactions over four locations to select the hybrid having higher yield and other potential attributes. Significant variation for genotypes (G), environment (E) and GEI were observed for the character yield. The environment Gazipur, Hathazari and Jamalpur were poor; but Burirhat, Barisal and Jessore was rich for hybrid maize production. Considering the mean, bi and S²di all the hybrids showed different response of adaptability under different environmental conditions. Variety 981was the highest yielding hybrid and it was stable variety over all environments. 900M Gold and Pinacale were high yielding but responsive to environment. Varieties 980 and 999 were moderate yield as well as stable over all environments.

Objectives:

To evaluate the yield potentiality as well as the stability of the imported and local hybrids

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at six locations viz; Gazipur, Barisal, Jessore, Hathazari, Rangpur and Jamalpur during rabi 2011-12. The materials consisted of twelve hybrids imported by different seed companies, 8 from Monsanto Seed Company (7001K, 827K, 717K, 962, 981, 900M Gold, 900 M and Pinacle), 3 from Lalteer (Pac 740, Pac 296 and Pac 339) and 3 BARI developed hybrids (BHM 5, BHM 7 and BHM 9) were evaluated in this trial. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with 3 replications. Seeds of each entry were sown in 2 rows, 5m long plot at 75 and 20 cm spacing. Seeds were sown on 28^th November, 30^th November,6^th December, 11^th December and 7^th December at Gazipur, Barisal, Hathazari, Rangpur and Jamalpur, respectively. One healthy seedling per hill was kept after thinning. Fertilizers were applied @ 250, 55, 110, 40, 5 and 1.5 kg/ha of N, P, K, S, Zn and B, respectively. Standard agronomic practices were followed and plant protection measures were taken as required. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used and the GE interaction was estimated by the AMMI model. The computational program for AMMI analyses is supplied by Duarte and Vencovsky (1999).The stability parameters, regression coefficient (bi) and deviation from regression (S²di) were estimated according to Eberhart and Russel (1966). Significance of differences among bi value and unity was tested by t-test, between S²di and zero by F-test.

Achievement/Findings:

The study revealed that twelve hybrids showed positive phenotypic index indicating higher yield while the other genotypes had negative phenotypic index indicating lower yield. The environment of Gazipur, Hathazari and Jamalpur were poor where as Jessore, Barisal and Rangpur were positive environments for hybrid maize production. Considering the mean, bi and S²di three parameters, it was evident that all the genotypes showed different response of adaptability under different environmental conditions. Among the hybrids 981, 980 and 999 exhibited the higher grain yield, bi~1 and S²di~0 indicated that these hybrids were stable across the environment. Among the hybrids, 981 showed the highest yield and it was a stable variety. 900MGold and Pinacale were high yielding but responsive to environment. Varieties 980 and 999 were moderate yield as well as stable over all environments. 7001K, BHM-5, BHM-7, HI grade and Raza 777 were highly stable with low yield potentiality.
