Experiments on chickpea genotypes and varieties (CPC-814, CPC-830, CPM-825, CPM-860, BARI sola-3 and Binasola-4) against pod borer were conducted at two locations (Magura and Nachole, Chapai Nowabgonj) of Bangladesh under pesticide free open field conditions to find out the chemical and bio-chemical basis of pod borer infestations. Different degrees of infestations were observed in the following order of susceptibility CPM-825> CPM-860> CPC-830> CPC-814. The mean pod damage among the test entries ranged from 8.3-15.2% at Magura and 13.9-16.6% at Nachole. The chemical compositions of genotypes and varieties at both locations were studied. There was a positive and significant relationship of pod borer infestation with grain protein content but negative relationships were found with the crude fibre and K content in pod shells but the S and the micro-nutrient (Fe, Mn and Zn) contents did not show significant difference among the test entries at both locations. The results clearly suggest that chickpea pod borer infestation increased with the increase of grain protein content while the increase of crude fibre and K content of pod shell reduces the pod borer infestation. However, CPC-814 showed the best performance against pod borer among the genotypes.

To find out the chemical and bio-chemical basis of pod borer infestations.

The experiments were conducted at BINA sub-station farm, Magura and farmer’s field at Nachole, under the district of Chapainawabganj during October 2006 to March 2007. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications at both the locations having plot size 3 m X 1.5 m. The chickpea seeds of two varieties (Binasola-4 and BARIsola-3), two mutants (CPM-825 and CPM-860) and two cultivars (CPC-814 and CPC-830) were sown in rows on 28 November 2006. The distance maintained between row-to-row and seed to seed were 30 cm and 15 cm respectively. Seeds of all varieties, mutants and cultivars were collected from Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh. Germination test was performed in the laboratory before sowing in the field. Different intercultural operations were accomplished as and when necessary for better growth and development of the plants. The plots were harvested separately at the stage of 70-80% pod maturity. Before harvesting the crops at both the locations, 10 plant samples from each plot was collected separately, then tagged properly and brought to the laboratory for studying the chemical and biochemical parameters such as a) Phosphorus content, b) Potassium content, c) Sulphur content, d) Calcium content, e) Magnesium content, f) Iron content, g) Manganese content, h) Protein content in grain and i) Crude fibre content  in pod shell. These parameters were estimated by following standard methods. The protein content of the grain samples were estimated by multiplying the percent total nitrogen with a factor of 6.25 (Jackson, 1973) and nitrogen by semi-micro Kjeldahl method (Page et al, 1989) and the methods used in the analysis for crude fibre called feed analysis, agricultural analysis or proximate analysis (Banerjee, 1998). The data were analyzed statistically by F-test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984). Analysis of variance was done with the help of computer package M-STAT developed by Russell (1986). The mean comparisons of the treatments were evaluated by DMRT (Duncan's Multiple Range Test).

The study it could be concluded that the percent pod infestations of chickpea by Helicoverpa armigera had a positive correlation with the protein content of chickpea grain, but a negative relationship observed with percent crude fibre and percent K content in pod shells. The mutant CPC-814 showed the best performance among the test entries irrespective of grain yield, infestation, protein content in grain, crude fibre, potassium and other nutrient contents.
