A field experiment was conducted in aman season (July-December) 2006 to study the effect of harvesting time on the yield and seed quality of aromatic rice. Three harvesting time viz., 25 days after flowering (DAF), 30 DAF, 35 DAF and three aromatic rice varieties namely, Kataribhog, Badshabhog and BRRI dhan34 were included in the experiment. The highest grain yield was obtained from second harvest (30 DAF) that was statistically similar to third harvest (35 DAF). Highest viability percentage was found at 30 DAF. Germination percentage and seedling length were highest when rice harvested at 30 DAF that was statistically similar to 35 DAF. Seed yield, viability, germination and seedling length were varied significantly due to variety. The interaction of harvesting time and variety on seed yield, viability, germination and seedling length were significant. The highest germination percentage was obtained from BRRI dhan34 variety when harvested at 30 DAF. The study based on seed yield, viability, germination and vigour, the best time of harvesting of transplanted aromatic rice was between 30 and 35 days after flowering in aman season.

To determine the appropriate harvesting time to get high quality rice seed.

The experiment was conducted at Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University Farm, Dinajpur, Bangladesh during aman season (July- December) of 2006. The experimental site was a medium high land with loamy soil having a pH value 6.0. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4.0m × 2.5m. Thirty day old seedlings were transplanted at a spacing of 20cm×15cm using three seedlings hill-1. All other cultural practices were done uniformly as per recommendation. Flowering time was recorded when 50% panicles flowered. The crop was harvested at three times i.e. at 25, 30 and 35 days after flowering (DAF) as per treatments. Two local and one modern aromatic rice varieties namely, Kataribhog, Badshabhog and BRRI dhan34, respectively were included in the experiment. Whole plots were harvested to obtain grain yield. After proper drying, 5-6 kg seeds were put in airtight plastic  containers from  January 2006 to  June 2007 in laboratory conditions. After six months of storage seed samples were tested for viability, germination and vigor using a Completely Randomized design with four replications. Seeds were placed on the moist filter paper in Petri dishes in four replications and germination was calculated following standard method (ISTA, 1966). Normal seedlings were counted following the methods of Thomson (1979). All the germinated seeds were counted for viability test and normal seedlings were counted for germination test. For vigour test the indirect method ‘Seedling length measurement’ was followed. During seedling evaluation of the germination test, length of radicle and plumule of 10 seedlings (at random) from each samples were measured and recorded. Lengths of radicle and plumule of the seedling are indication of vigour of the seed (Huda, 2001). Data on various parameters were statistically analyzed and the means were compared by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Seed yield significantly influenced by harvesting time. Seed yields increased from the first harvest (25 DAF) to the second harvest (30 DAF) then decreased slightly at the third harvest (35 DAF). The highest seed yield (2.71 t ha-1) was obtained from second harvest (30 DAF) that was statistically similar to third harvest (35 DAF) and the lowest (2.43 t ha-1) was obtained from first harvest (25 DAF). Among the three tested aromatic rice varieties the highest seed yield (2.80 t ha-1) was obtained from BRRI dhan34 and the lowest seed yield (2.43 t ha-1) was obtained from Badshabhog. Seed yield showed significant variation due to interaction of harvesting time and variety. BRRI dhan34 produced highest seed yield (2.95 t ha-1) at 30 DAF and Badshabhog gave the lowest seed (2.20 t ha-1) at 25 DAF harvest which was statistically similar to Kataribhog at 25 DAF harvest . The effect of harvesting time after six months of storage on germination was found statistically significant (Table 1). The highest germination of seed (88.67%) was obtained when seeds were harvested at 30 DAF that was statistically similar to 35 DAF. Considering harvesting time, the germination percentages gradually increase with the advancement of time from 25 DAF to 30 DAF. Modern aromatic rice cv. BRRI dhan34 and local cv. Kataribhog performed better in respect of germination during six months of storage. The varietal differences in germination of the seeds while harvest at different maturity levels were also reported by Sa et al. (1988). The interaction of harvesting time and variety on germination is significant. The highest germination (93%) was obtained from BRRI dhan34 variety when harvested at 30 DAF. Seedling vigor as express in term of seedling length was significantly affected by different harvesting time after six months of storage in laboratory condition. Maximum seedling length (17.92 cm) was found in 30 DAF harvesting that was similar to 35 DAF harvesting. Seeds attained higher seedling vigour much earlier to reaching physiological maturity.Seedling growth rate is oldest test for evaluating seed vigour. Its procedure is simple and convenient to perform in conjunction with germination tests (Copeland, 1976).  However, the magnitude of seedling growth in terms of seedling length varied according to harvesting time and varieties. Elongation of root and shoot is an expression of vigor index. Higher seedling length was found in local aromatic rice cv. Kataribhog. The interaction effect of harvesting time and variety on seedling length was significant.  The study based on seed yield seed viability, germination and vigour, the best time of harvesting transplanted aromatic rice was between 30 and 35 days after flowering in aman season.
