Nineteen different ratios of floral components viz. limonene, phenylacetaldehyde, methyl 2-methooxibenzoate and salicylaldehyde  were tested under four experiments for two consecutive years viz. 2004 and 2005 at farmers, bean fields (Haibatpur and Shahabajpur), Jessore to evaluate the floral blends for catches legume pod borer under insecticides spray. Among different combinations of the floral blends in ratio of 25 : 25 : 300 : 150  of (-) limonene, phenylacetaldehyde, methyl 2-methooxibenzoate and salicylaldehyde   components offered the maximum of catches (0.36 moths per trap per night), while in ratio 50 : 0 : 50 : 0  of same components the minimum (0 moth per trap per night). The other insects such as Helicoverpa armigera, honey bee Apis spp., wasp and other unknown insects were also caught in the floral baited traps.

To evaluate the floral blends for catches legume pod borer under insecticides spray.

The studies were undertaken for two consecutive years viz. 2004 and 2005 at farmers bean fields (Haibatpur and Shahabajpur), Jessore to evaluate the 19 different ratios of floral components for catches legume pod borer under insecticides spray. Ten combinations of floral components were used for catching moth of Maruca vitrta moths on country bean fields during September 24, 2004 to October 22, 2004 at Jessore and nine combinations of floral components were also tested for trapping Maruca vitrata moths during September 12, 2005 to October 9, 2005 at farmers bean fields. All trials were laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications and spacing of 15.0 m and 20.0 m between plot and block respectively. Plastic boim water trap was used in the study.  The synthetic floral blends were collected from Natural Resources Institute (NIR), United Kingdom. The floral components of (-) Limonene, phenylacetaldehyde, methyl 2-methooxibenzoate and salicylaldehyde were used in lures. The synthetic floral blends were represented in polyethylene plastic sachets. The trap consists of 2-3 L water capacity of 20 cm height round bottom clear plastic container. Two triangular holes were cut any two opposite sides of container starting 5 cm up from the bottom of plastic container. The trap was filled with soup water of 4 to 5 cm height maintained in side the trap through out the study period. The floral blend lure was hanged through the centre of the lid in side the trap in such a way that 2 to 3 cm above the surface of the soup water. The traps then were setting with the help of two bamboo sticks at the level of crop canopy .Trap catches were counted at every alternate day and trapped moths discarded at that time. This was continued  up to 28 nights after trap setting. Number of healthy and infested flowers and pods were recorded at 7 days intervals from 25 inflorescence randomly selected starting from 7 days after trap setting up to 4 weeks at each plot. The mean number of catches of legume pod borer moths per trap per night was calculated from every trap catches. The data of mean number of legume pod borer moths, percentage of infested flowers and pods data were transformed using by square root transformation. All data were analyzed statistically and the means were separated using DMRT by MSTAT computer software.

In the present study the flower and pod damage recorded significantly different or not significant among the tested floral blends under the trials in the bean fields in two years. In spite of small number of moths caught by the traps the flower and pod damage significantly differed in some trials in the same bean field. It might be due to some farmers applied different management practices, such as hand picking of infested flowers and pods and destruction of them at every alternate day and spray several combinations of insecticides or cocktail (mixtures of 2-5 insecticides) at every alternate day for the control of Maruca vitrata in the bean field and influencing the significant differences of flower and pod damage. The floral blends trials were the first time conducted in the farmers bean fields of Jessore in Bangladesh where they have been using insecticides exclusively for the control of Maruca vitrata. The results did not have conformity to other workers due to catching small number of moths by the traps. Further study is necessary to obtain the best results with floral compounds against Maruca vitrata.
