An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during February to June 2006 to study the effect of sowing date on growth and yield of three mungbean varieties. Three mungbean varieties viz. BARI moog5, BINA moog2 and BINA moog5 and five dates of sowing viz., 20 February, 7 March, 22 March, 6 April and 21 April, 2006 were included in the trial with three replications. The results revealed that BARImoog5 produced the highest yield whereas BINA moog2 produced the lowest yield for all the sowing dates. The mungbean sown on 20 February 2006 produced the highest yield of 476 kg ha-1 which decreased with each delay in sowing and the lowest yield of 41 kg ha-1 was produced for 21 April sowing. The result showed that highest mungbean yield of 526 kg ha-1could be obtained from sowing of variety BARI moog5 on 20 February.  The delay in sowing after this time could reduce yield drastically due to reduction in number of nodes, branches and pods per plant as well as seed weight.

To study the effect of date of sowing on yield of some mungbean varieties in Kharif season.

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during February to June 2006 to study the effect of date of sowing on growth and yield of three mungbean varieties. The site is located at 24075′ North latitude and 900 50′ East longitudes and at an altitude of 18 m above mean sea level.  The soil of the site belongs to the Sonatala series of non-calcareous dark-grey floodplain soil under the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain Agro Ecological Zone, ‘AEZ-9’ (UNDP and FAO, 1988). The field was a medium high land having well-drained silty loam soil with pH 6.8. The experiment comprised five date of sowing viz., 20 February, 7 March, 22 March, 6 April and 21 April, and three varieties viz., BARI moog5, BINA moog2 and BINA moog5. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications.  Sowing  dates  were  assigned to the  main  plot and varieties in the sub-plot.  The unit plot size was 4m × 3m. The land was applied with 12-55-22 kg ha-1 N, P2O5 and K2O in the form of urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash, respectively, during final land preparation for each date of sowing. Seeds of each variety were sown on the specified dates @ 25 kg ha-1 at 30 cm apart rows. Distance between plants in each row was maintained at about 8 cm by thinning. Two weedings were done at 15 and 30 days after sowing (DAS). Each weeding was followed by thinning to have an approximate distance of 8 cm between plants in each row. No irrigation was required during the experimental period. The crop was infested with pod borer at flowering and pod setting stages which was controlled by 0.02% Malathion 57 EC. Mature pods (brown colour) were harvested from the central 3m × 1.8m area of each plot by handpicking whenever found. Harvesting was started on 15 May and was continued up to 26 June 2006 depending on the variety and sowing date. From each plot, five plants were randomly selected and tagged for recording of data on different yield related characters such as plant height, number of branches plant-1, nodes plant-1, number of pods m-2 and number of seeds pod-1. The seed yield, stover yield, 1000-seed weight and harvest index were recorded from the harvest of central 3m × 1.8 m area of each plot. Collected pods from the harvest area at each time were dried in the sun for 3 days on threshing floor. Seeds were separated from the plants by beating the pods with bamboo sticks. The dried seeds and stovers were cleaned and weighed plot wise and then expressed in term of kg ha-1. The collected data were statistically analyzed and differences among treatment means were adjusted by Duncan’s Multiple range Test with the help of a computer based statistical package program MSTAT-C.

In the present study BARI moog5 showed the best yield performance among the three cultivars tested in Kharif-I season and the best yield of all these cultivars could be achieved if sowing could be done at around 20 February. The delay in sowing would cause drastic reduction in seed yield due to reduction in yield related characters. It can be concluded that high mungbean yield could be achieved by sowing of BARI moog5 on around 20 February at Mymensingh region.
