Comparative Yield Trial of Imported and Local Hybrids of Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study assessed genotype × environment interaction and stability for grain yield, days to silking, plant height and days to maturity with 32 hybrids across four different locations of Bangladesh during 2009-10. The AMMI model (additive main effects and multiplicative interaction) was used to assess the additive and multiplicative effects of the interaction. Significant variation for genotypes (G), environment (E) and GEI were observed for the character yield. The environment of Gazipur and Hathazari were poor; but that of Jessore and Rangpur were rich for hybrid maize production. Considering the mean, bi and S²di all the hybrids showed different response of adaptability under different environmental conditions. Among these hybrids Prince, JKMH-502, NA-04, Victory super exhibited higher grain yield than the better check variety BHM 9; bi~1 and S²di~0 indicated that these hybrids and BHM 7 are stable across the environment. Considering the yield potentiality and stability parameter five hybrids were found promising across locations which would be evaluated next season in the farmer’s field.

Objectives:

. To evaluate the yield potentiality as well as the stability of the imported hybrids

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at four locations viz. Gazipur, Jessore, Hathazari and Rangpur during rabi 2009-10. The materials consisted of 28 hybrids imported by different seed companies, one BRAC variety (Uttaran-2) and three BARI developed hybrids viz. BARI Hybrid Maize 5 (BHM-5), BARI Hybrid Maize 7 (BHM-7) and BARI Hybrid Maize 9 (BHM-9). The experiment was laid out in RCBD with 3 replications. Seeds of each entry were sown in 2 rows, 5m long plot at 75 and 20 cm spacing on December, 2009. One healthy seedling per hill was kept after thinning. Fertilizers were applied @ 250, 120, 120, 40 and 5 kg/ha of N, P₂O₅, K₂O, S and Zn, respectively. Standard agronomic practices were applied. All data were processed and analyzed using Cropstat 6.1 program.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the yield potentiality, stability and other parameters (husk cover, disease reaction, stalk lodging) five hybrids viz. Prince (10.63 t/ha), JKMH-502 (10.44 t/ha), NA-04 (9.82 t/ha), Victory super (9.81 t/ha) and BHM 7 (9.48 t/ha) were found promising across locations and may be used in field level for future cultivation.
