Necessity of Post-harvest Technology Development to Minimize the Food Shortage in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In Bangladesh every year large amount of food grains are imported from foreign countries to meet the local demands. Though there is a lot of high yielding variety of crops being grown in our country. Due to natural hazards like floods, drought and cyclone are claiming to the country time to time rich are damaging a large amount of crop production. It could be a good approach to develop some appropriate technology like post harvest technology to know how much crop can be harvested and preserved. The study was carried out to give an idea about the detail study need to save crop production loss especially for food grain crops.

Objectives:

1.To make aware of the farming community of the country about the harvesting loss and uses of harvest technology

2. To reduce the loss of food grains thus contribute to minimize the food shortage problems

Methodology:

The post harvest losses of food grains in developing countries specially in Bangladesh. The consequences of such a loss are evaluated in terms of human suffering and economic cost.It represent on international challenges. Effective prevention of these loses vary from country to country and also in same country for different crops due to variation of environmental factors as well as human efforts utilization for prevention. Recently the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) carried out a study on paddy crop loss in the context of the sub continent From the study the losses appeared to contributed by the following major harvesting factors (a) harvesting 1-5%, (b) transportation 2-7%, (c) threshing 2- 6%, (d) drying 1 -6%, (e) storing 2-6% and milling 2-10% (IIT, 1999).Thus the cumulative losses could amount to as high N 40% by the weight and are normally accompanied by losses of quality also. Quality losses can take places all the stages but more severely at the stage of drying, storage and milling.If the above factors of losses can be assumed for Bangladesh context as (a) harvesting 3.5%, (b) transportation 3%, (c) threshing 3.5%,(d) drying 3.5%, (e) storing 3.5% and milling 3%,then the losses accumulated as 20%. Therefore these factors indicate the urgency of attaching the highest importance of post harvest problems for the benefit of farming community and the country.

From the study, it could be concluded that appropriate post harvest technology is very essential to minimize the food production loss. Detail level study could bring a good results. Some study in different district of Bangladesh can be taken- For drying purposes natural gas can be used to the small scale drying industries level. Agricultural Engineer could play a vital role to conduct the study and solved the problem through developing new methodology and local technology for the farmers.
