Morphological Characteristics and Yield Performance of M3 Mutants of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted with 40 (previously selected in M₃) tomato mutants and their respective two parental cultivars Bahar and J-5 Tomato (a Japanese cultivar) as check to evaluate the morphological characteristics and yield performance in M₃ generation. The experiment was carried out at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture farm Mymensingh during October 2011 to February 2012. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The selected parameters were the plant height, number of leaves per plant, branches per plant, flower cluster per plant, flowers per plant, fruit cluster per plant, fruits per plant, individual fruit weight and fruit weight per plant. Considering yield & yield components seven mutants of Bahar and eight mutants of J-5 Tomato, a total of fifteen mutants have been selected for evaluation in M₄ generation.

Objectives:

To observe the morphological characters of M₃ mutants of tomato and select the morphologically better tomato mutants with higher yield potentiality in M₃ generation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the research farm of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during 15 October 2011 to 20 February 2012. The seeds of M₃ generation were developed through exposing the irradiation doses of 200, 300Gy gamma rays on two tomato cultivars viz. Bahar and J-5 tomato respectively. The seedlings were raised in the iron trays of 91.44 cm × 60.96 cm size. The total 40 M₃ mutants (20 from Bahar and 20 from J-5), developed from each gamma irradiation dose were compared with their respective parental cultivars for selection. Plant spacing was 60 cm x 40 cm. Cowdung and other fertilizers were mixed with soil to prepare the plot suitable for planting. The 25 days old seedlings of all the mutants and cultivars were transplanted in the experimental plot quickly in the afternoon. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. Weeding and mulching were accomplished as and when necessary. Gap filling, propping, pest and disease control activities were done when it was necessary. After 63 days of transplanting (DAT) ripe tomatoes harvesting was started and initially it was continued at 5 days interval. All harvesting was completed by 20 February 2012. Data on plant height, number of leaves per plant, branches per plant, flower cluster per plant, flowers per cluster, flowers per plant, fruit per cluster, fruit cluster per plant, fruits per plant, individual fruit weight and fruit weight per plant were recorded. The collected data were analyzed statistically following the Mstat program. The differences among the means were compared by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) following Gomez and Gomez (1984) at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

Result revealed that the mutants selected from lower doses up to 300 Gy showed better performance irrespective of the cultivars. Among all the yield contributing characters, it was observed that the maximum direct contribution towards yield was through individual fruit weight followed by number branches/plant, flower/plant, fruit/plant, plant height and fruit yield leading superior performance. Fifteen mutants were selected for further evaluation in M₄.
