Effect of Higher Dose and Split Applications of Sulphate of Ammonia on the Yield of Mature Clonal Tea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to find out the effect of higher dose and split applications of sulphate of ammonia on the yield of mature clonal tea, BT1 in Bilascherra Experimental Farm of BTRI and Sathgaon Tea Estate from 1977-1984. Different doses and splits of N from sulphate of ammonia were used. It was observed that application of higher doses in splits produced slightly higher yield over customary 80 lbs of N/ac in a single split upto 1980. But after that higher dose (160 lbs N/ac) failed to produce higher yield in comparison with lower doses.

Objectives:

To study the effect of higher dose and split applications of sulphate of ammonia on the yield of mature clonal tea

Methodology:

The experiment was laid in RCB design with three replications in Bilascherra Experimental Farm of BTRI and Sathgaon Tea Estate from 1977-1984. The high yielding sections of BT1 is selected. Different doses of N from sulphate of ammonia were used. The treatments were: T₁= 80 lbs N/ac (1 split), T₂= 80 lbs N/ac (2 split), T₃= 80 lbs N/ac (4 split), T₄= 100 lbs N/ac (1 split), T₅= 120 lbs N/ac (1 split), T₆= 120 lbs N/ac (2 split), T₇= 120 lbs N/ac (4 split), T₈= 120 lbs N/ac (6 split), T₉= 140 lbs N/ac (2 split), T₁₀= 150 lbs N/ac (3 split), T₁₁= 150 lbs N/ac (6 split) and T₁₂= 160 lbs N/ac (4 split). The applications were made between early May and October. The yield data were recorded regularly.
