Secondary Yield Trial of Barley

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Joydebpur and Ishurdi to observe performance of barley genotypes in ideal growing condition and the trial was also conducted at Kalapara of Patuakhali and Paikgacha of Khulna to find out adaptive genotypes under saline condition during the rabi season 2003-04. Eleven genotypes including two check varieties, BARI Barley 3 and BARI Barley 4 were evaluated in this trial. Among the genotypes BHL–11 produced the highest yield (2.96 t/ha) at Joydebpur and BHL – 08 produced highest yield (3.65 t/ha) at Ishurdi. On the other hand BHL–11 produced highest yield (2.06 t/ha) at Paikgacha, Khulna where as BARI barley 4 was the highest yielder (1.01 t/ha)) followed by BSHL– 04 (0.95 t/ha) at Kalapara, Patuakhali under saline condition.

Objectives:

To select promising genotypes to release high yield potential hulless variety of barley

Methodology:

This experiment was conducted with eleven entries including two check varieties i.e BARI Barley 3 and BARI Barley 4 at four locations i.e. Joydebpur, Ishurdi, Paikgacha of Khulna and Kalapara of Patuakhali during rabi 2003-04 following Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The unit plot size was 3m x 2m maintaining a spacing of 25cm between rows. Fertilizers N, P₂O₅, K₂O, were applied at the rate of 100:60:40 kg/ha respectively. Half of N and the whole amount of other fertilizers were applied as basal dose and rest of the urea was applied in two installments; first and second installments were applied after 1st and 2nd irrigation respectively. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The soil salinity level at Khulna during 26 November, 11 & 26 December 2003, 10 & 25 January, 10 & 26 February, 10 & 25 March 2004 were 2.14, 1.04, 1.80, 3.96, 5.16, 6.82, 4.90, 6.14 and 3.35 mm hos/cm, respectively. Whereas salinity level at Patuakhali were 2.05, 3.24, 3.68, 5.06, 5.87, 7.56, 8.22, 8.76 & 9.55 on 1, 15 & 30 December, 15 & 30 January, 15 February, 1, 16 & 30 March 2004.Data on days to 50% heading and maturity, plant height (cm), number of fertile tillers per plant, spike length (cm), 1000 grain weight and grain yield (t/ha) were recorded and statistical analysis were done following DMRT

Achievement/Findings:

From the study, it was observed that BHL – 08 was the earliest entry in terms of days to heading (57 days) and BHL–11 produced the highest yield (2.96 t/ha) followed by BHL-08 (2.94 t/ha) at Joydebpur location. Both the check varieties were found as the earlier entries, which were identical with the BHL-04 for days to heading at Ishurdi. BHL–08 produced highest yield (3.65 t/ha) followed by BHL–07 (3.46 t/ha) and BHL–05 (3.38 t/ha) at Ishurdi. Combine effect of genotypes over Joydebpur and Ishurdi, it was observed that BHL – 08 was the highest yielder for grain yield (3.29 t/ha) followed by BHL – 07 (3.13 t/ha) and BHL – 09 (2.97 t/ha). Under the saline condition BHL–11 produced highest yield (2.06 t/ha) followed by BHL-10 (2.00 t/ha) at Paikgacha, Khulna and BARI barley 4 was the highest yielder (1.01 t/ha)) followed by BSHL – 04 (0.95 t/ha) at Kalapara, Patuakhali. However the average yield of the genotypes were remarkably low at Kalapara, Patuakhali probably due to late sowing.Combine effect of genotypes over Paikgacha, Khulna and Kalapara, Patuakhali, it was observed that BSHL – 04 was the highest yielder for grain yield (1.44 t/ha) under saline condition.
