Socio-economic Impact of Modern Variety Rice Cultivation in Bangladesh: a Case Study in Munshiganj District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A research was conducted for finding the socio-economic and environmental impact of modern variety (MV) rice cultivation at Munshiganj district in Bangladesh. The changes of income, employment opportunity, use of machinery, fertilizer, pesticides and irrigation has been described in the paper. Farmer's opinion on the changes of environment connected with adoption of MV rice cultivation are also described. The soil crosion in the area of MV rice cultivation has been increased remarkably. The cropping patterns are also be changed due to MV rice cultivation. It was found that the cost benefit ratios were 0.86 and 1.03 for MV and LV rice cultivation. It is indicated that the LV rice cultivation is more profitable tan MV rice cultivation. Therefore, the MV rice area is increasing day by day.

Objectives:

To investigated the socio economic and environmental impact of modern variety rice at Munshiganj district in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Data for the research were collected in 1995-96 from three thanas of Munshiganj district namely :Luhajong, Sreenagar and Serajdikhan.Hundred farmers from different villages of each thana were selected randomly. The farmers were asked for collecting information through a questionnaire but all questions were open. That means, they were explained properly about question before getting their reply. The farmers were asked about their age, schooling family size and source of income for finding the socio-economic condition. They were also asked about the adoption of new technology for rice cultivation in following aspects: i) land preparation, ii) method of pest and diseases control, iii) use of fertilizer, vi) use of agricultural implement such as seed drill, sprayer, harvester, thresher and dryer.

The opinion of farmers were recorded for changing the environment due MV rice cultivation in following aspects: i) drought, flood and rainfall, ii) soil erosion, iii) insect, pest and diseases, iv) problem of mosquito, v) fish production, vi) deforestation, ix) water pollution, x) human and animal health, xi) employment opportunity, xii) change of income and xiii) drinking water problem.

The cost of MV and LV rice cultivation was calculated by collecting different information such as cost of labour, land preparation, fertilizer, insecticides, irrigation etc. The cost and benefit (CB) ration was calculated on basis of production cost and selling price of paddy just after harvesting.

In conclusion, it is not aim to stop the MV rice cultivation in Munshiganj district due to some negative impacts. However, some steps should be taken for increases the rice yield to minimise the negative impacts. It might be as follows:

1. Deep water MV rice should be developed and introduced in teh area.

2. Research should be carried out for monitoring nitrates and pollution in drinking water.

3. The government should take some actions on the use of fertilizer, insecticides, pesticides and use in the agricultural land for saving our ecosystem including human life.

4. The agricultural extension department should take some training program for farmers for the safely use of fertilizer and pesticides.

5. Collaborative and interdisciplinary research should be forwarded in future.
