Development of Inclined Plate Planter for Conservation Tillage

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Conservation tillage is a new technology to the farmers of Bangladesh. It is becoming important to minimize the cost of land preparation, environmental pollution, maintain soil health and timeliness of operation. Upland crops like maize, wheat, paddy, jute, onion, garlic, potatoes, vegetables, pulses and oil seeds can be cultivated under conservation tillage. But the farmers of Bangladesh are still practicing broadcasting method of seed sowing by conventional tillage. Demands of conservation tillage machinery are increasing day by day. Considering the demand, power tiller operated machines have been developed in Farm Machinery and Post harvest Process (FMP) Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). The machines are consists of high speed rotavator, seed box, inclined seed metering plate, seed tube, furrow opener and soil compaction roller. Row number, spacing and sowing depth are adjustable, Land preparation, seed sowing and leveling are done at a time. After fabrication, the planter was tested in laboratory and field condition for sowing wheat, maize, paddy, soybean and pulses crops. There were different sizes of seed metering plates for planting different types of seeds' Before extension of the machines in farmer's field, it was tested in experimental plot, BARI, Gazipur for sowing maize and paddy. The planter was also tested for sowing maize and soybean in farmer's field Kishorganj, Dinajpur and Nowakhali. Seed rate of the planter for maize and paddy were 20 kg and 35 kg per ha, respectively. Field capacity of planter and seeder were 0.08 ha/hr and 0.11 ha/hr. Cost of planter was TK 45000 per unit without power source.

Objectives:

a) To develop power tiller operated seeder and bed planter for conservation tillage practice,

b) To test the seeder and planter in laboratory and field condition.

Methodology:

Locally available materials were used to fabricate the seeder. The different functions, which were combined in single operation, were tillage, sowing and leveling/compaction. The different types of functional parts, required to perform the operations were a) high speed rotary tiller, b) seeder, and c) soil compaction roller. Combined operations of these ensured timeliness in land preparation for crop production. A photographic view of the minimum tillage inclined plate planter and its operational views are shown in this experiment, respectively. A 120 cm wide High Speed Rotary Tiller (HSRT) was used in the planter. The numbers of tilling blades were 48 and rotary speed was 500 rpm. The HSRT gets power from the engine through some power transmission system. Seeder was consisted of seed box, seed metering plate, seed tube and furrow opener. Seed box have six chambers which contain seed metering plate at an inclination of 40° with the vertical wall of the box. There were different sizes of seed metering plates for planting different types of seeds. Seed tube delivered the seed from seed hopper to furrow openers through seed tube. There were six furrow openers. These furrow openers can be adjusted horizontally as well as vertically according to the crop requirement. A soil compaction roller cum leveler was fitted behind the seeder for compacting as well as leveling the land after seed planting. Seeding depth can be adjusted by using the roller through depth control lever. After fabrication of the seeder, it was tested in the divisional workshop for maize and paddy seed. Field performance test of the seeder was conducted in divisional experimental plot, BARI, Gazipur, farmers field Kishorganj, Nowakhali and Sherpur for planting paddy. In Gazipur, 10 decimal land was planting maize. Seed rate was 20 kg per ha. In Kishorganj and Sherpur, paddy seeds were sown in 130 decimal land. Seed rate was 26 kg per ha. Irrigation, fertilizing, weeding and other intercultural operations were done timely.

Achievement/Findings:

Time and cost required for complete land preparation and planting by the planter were respectively, 88% and 57% less compared to traditional practice. Conventional planting method produced significantly higher grain yield (5.30 t/ha) over inclined plat planting method (4.95 t/ha). Number of panicle/ m², grain/ penicle, were higher in conventional method compared to bed planting method, which influenced significantly the higher yield. Due to higher panicle length in conventional method, number of grains/panicle, were also higher in the planting method. Sterility was significantly lower in conventional method which contribute increased grain yield. Seed rate of the planter for maize and paddy were 20 kg and 35 kg per ha, respectively. Field capacity of planter and seeder were 0.08 ha/hr and 0.11 ha/hr.
