Genotype-by-environment Interaction Assessment Using Additive Main Effects and the Multiplicative Interaction Model (ammi) in Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Imported seeds are the main seed source of maize cultivation in Bangladesh. Hybrid maize seeds are imported by different seed companies every year and these seeds are very much popular amongst the maize growers’ community. The seeds are costly compared to locally produced varieties but they cannot perform equally well all over the country. We had taken 20 popular commercial hybrid maize varieties, including 2 local checks, under this study to evaluate the magnitude of stability and adaptability in different regions under different environmental status. We had used AMMI (Additive Main effects and Multiplicative Interactions) model to analyze the genotype-by-environment interactions over 4 locations and 3 years to select the hybrid having higher yield and other potential attributes. Considering the mean, phenotypic and genotypic indices, bi and S2di, it was evident that all genotypes showed different responses of adaptability under different environmental conditions. Analysis of variance showed high significant effects of environments, genotypes and G×E for grain yield and plant height. Genotypes Prince, Victory Super, C-1921, Pacific-984, Pacific-759 and BHM-9 (Chk2) were higher yielding as well as stable over the environments. 900 M Gold is the highest yielder but responsive to

environments. Pioneer is the most stable but not good yielder. Burirhat of Rangpur (Northern region of Bangladesh) was found highly suitable for hybrid maize cultivation followed by Jessore (Western part).

Objectives:

1.To determine the Genotype Environment Interaction effects on grain yield of maize hybrids for diverse agro-ecological regions in Bangladesh,

2.To identify areas where hybrid maize is well adapted to give economic returns and to select hybrids that are broadly adapted across the maize growing areas in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted under Plant Breeding Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) at four different agro-ecological zones in the country for three planting seasons (2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11). Twenty commercial field corn hybrid varieties including two checks BARI Hybrid Maize7 (BHM7) and BARI Hybrid Maize9 (BHM9) were evaluated in these experiments. The experiments were carried out in a randomized complete block design, with three replications. Each experimental plot was comprised of 5 m long rows. Standard agronomic practices were followed (Quayyum, 1993) and plant protection measures were taken as required. Two border rows were used to minimize the border effects. Ten randomly selected plants were used for recording observations on plant height. All the plants in two bordered rows were considered for plot yield. The grain yield (ton ha-1) data was estimated and corrected at 12% moisture. The contribution of each genotype and each environment to the GE interaction is assessed by the biplot graph display in which yieldmeans are plotted against the scores of the first principal component of the interaction (IPCA1). The stability parameters, regression coefficient (bi) and deviation from regression (S2di) were estimated according to Eberhart and Russell (1966). Significance of differences among bi value and unity was tested by t-test, between S2di and zero by F-test. All the data were subjected to analysis using statistical analysis package software Cropsta7.2 version (AMMI, SSA and BANOVA models).

Achievement/Findings:

The AMMI statistical model has been used to diagnose the G×E interaction pattern of grain yield of hybrid maize. Genotypes Prince, Victory Super, C-1921, Pacific-984, Pacific-759 and BHM-9 (Chk2) showed broad adaptation with high yield and were hardly affected by GEI, and thus will perform well across a wide range of environments. Burirhat with a relatively stable genotype performance could be regarded as good selection site for identifying broad based and adaptable maize genotypes and other improvement work on maize.
