Effect of Pruning in Different Months of the Year on the Yield of Mature Tea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted in Nurjahan Tea Estate to study the effect of pruning in different months of the year on the yield of mature tea from 1968-75. Light pruning was done in the different months of the year. Subsequently different types of pruning were done in different plots in different year as per schedule. Four year pruning cycles was followed i.e. LP-DSK-MSK-LSK. The results indicated that winter pruning is better over pruning in other months of the year. Pruning during the period from November to February gave the height yield of green leaf which was significantly higher than pruning during the months from March to August. Pruning during April to June seemed to reduce the yield drastically. The results also showed that there are possibilities of pruning two months earlier (Sep.-Oct.) than the normal pruning period and highest yield is obtained from September pruning.

Methodology:

This experiment was laid under RCBD with 3 replications in Nurjahan Tea Estate from 1968-75. The plots were light pruned during the starting year. Light pruning was done in the different months of the year. Subsequently different types of pruning were done in different plots in different year as per schedule. Four year pruning cycles was followed i.e. LP-DSK-MSK-LSK. Data were recorded regularly.
