Twenty hybrids, produced from diallel crossing including reciprocals among five parents, were studied along with the parents to find out best cross combination for quality contributing traits. Predominance of additive-additive gene action was noted for most of the characters except hollowness and dry matter content, where additivedominance gene action was predominant; flesh thickness and brix percentage, where dominance-dominance gene action were predominant. Among all five parents, no parent was found as good combiner for more than two characters. The parent IB 23, IB 40 and IB 57 was found good general combiner for the trait dry matter content, fruit length and non-reducing sugar. The best specific combiners were IB 23 X IB 40 for fruit breadth, brix percentage, non-reducing sugar, total sugar and fruit yield; IB 40 x IB 50 for hollowness and beta carotene; IB 40 x IB 47 for flesh thickness; IB 40 x IB 57 for brix (%) and IB 23 x IB 57 for reducing sugar.

To estimate combining ability of parents in several crosses to screen out the suitable one with higher production and better nutritional quality for future breeding program.

The materials comprised of five advanced inbred lines namely, IB 23, IB 40, IB 47, IB 50 and IB 57 developed by the Department Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University was used in the study for combining ability analysis in a 5x5 diallel population. The inbreds were synthesized in the previous year. The 25 entries (20 crosses and five parents) were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications at the experimental plot of Genetics and Plant Breeding Department, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur-1706 during November, 2012 to March, 2013 for studying performance. A single seedling/pit of about 25 days old was transplanted at a spacing of 2 m x 2 m in lines. Each genotype was grown in double row of 2 plants in 4 square meter area. Observations were recorded and estimated on fruit length, fruit breadth, hollowness, flesh thickness, dry matter content, brix percentage, reducing sugar, non-reducing sugar, total sugar and fruit yield. Non-additive gene action is signified by the SCA effects in the expression of the characters of a crop. Specific combining ability indicated performance of some specific cross combination. That is why it is related to a particular cross. High SCA effects may arise not only in crosses involving high general combiners but also in those involving low combiners. Estimates on SCA effects of the crosses in F1 generation revealed that there were a good number of crosses having significant positive or negative SCA effects on different important traits of pumpkin. The hybrid IB 23 X IB 40 showed significant favorable scaeffects for seven yield components namely fruit breadth, hollowness, dry matter, brix percentage, non-reducing sugar, total sugar and fruit yield. Among all other hybrids significant sca effects were present for all characteristics except fruit length are IB 23 X IB 47 for hollowness, IB 23 X IB 50 for total sugar, IB 40 X IB 47 for flesh thickness, IB 40 X IB 50 for beta carotene, IB 40 X IB 57 for reducing sugar, IB 47 X IB 50 for fruit breadth and hollowness, IB 47 X IB 57 for beta carotene and total sugar, IB 50 X IB 57 for brix percentage. In these hybrids all kinds of parental combinations like high x high, high x low, medium x medium and medium x low were found. This suggests that either additive x additive and/or additive x dominance genetic interactions were predominant. The superiority of these crosses may be due to complementary and duplicate type gene interactions. Reciprocal effect was found for the entire trait except fruit breadth, dry matter and fruit yield. Among the ten reciprocal crosses, significant positive value was observed in IB 40 X IB 23 for non-reducing sugar, IB 47 X IB 23 for non-reducing sugar, IB 47 X IB 40 for fruit length, brix percentage, IB 50 X IB 40 for flesh thickness and fruit length, IB 50 X IB 47 for flesh thickness, IB 57 X IB 40 for brix percentage and, IB 57 X IB 50 for hollowness and brix percentage.
