Experimental Pond Culture of Tiger Shrimp, Penaeus Monodon Fab. with Various Stocking Rates and Supplemental Feeding

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon was cultured in earthen ponds at the stocking rates of 1, 2, 3 and 4 shrimps/m². The shrimps were fed with commercial feed at 25-15% and 10-2% of biomass during nursery and grow-out operations respectively. After 105 days 01 rearing, highest production of 513.53 kg/ha/crop was obtained from 2/m² stock followed by 492.2 kg/ha/crop from 3/m², 420.2 kg/ha/ crop from 4/m² stock and the least was 160 Kg/ha/crop from 1/m² stock. The food conversion ratios were 4.18, 2.77, 2.7 and 2.97 for 1.23 arid 4/m² stocks respectively.

Objectives:

2. To encouraging the farmers to promote their cultivation system.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted in two phases. In the first phase, nursery operation of P. monodon post-larvae (PL) was carried out in a 0.14ha pond inside the BWDB (Bangladesh water Development Board) polder no. 21 at Brackishwater Station, Paikgacha. In the second phase grow-out operation was carried out to determine the stocking density, growth and survivability of P. monodon. The nursery pond was consisted of a mini wooden sluice and bamboo splits screening with synthetic natting. Before stocking, the pond was sun dried followed by liming at the rate of 200 g/ha and subsequently fertilized with cowdung (1500 kg/ha). Dry branches of bamboo and plum were placed in the nursery pond to provide shelter and attachment substrata for the stocked PL. After 15 days of liming, tidal water was introduced to the nursery pond. About 50000 P. monodon PL were stocked in nursery. pond to rear for 6 weeks. Feeding of the PL were done once daily in the evening with, commercial shrimp feed (Saudi-Bangla shrimp feed) at the rate 0 f 25-15% of the body weight.On the other hand, low laying tidal flood plain on the bank of the river Sibsha was divided into 8 ponds (0.15 ha each) by earthen dam for grow-out study. All the ponds were interconnected with pipe sluice for water exchange and wooden sluice was placed at main entrance for water regulation. To prevent intrusion of predators and other weed organisms, a screen made of bamboo s.rlit s and a fine meshed nylon net were placed at the mounth of wooden and pipe sluice of each pond. The grow-out ponds were limed (200 kg/ha) and after 15 days of liming, urea and TSP were applied separately at the rate of 50 kg/h) each. After 3 days of fertilization, tidal water was introduced to grow-out ponds and P. monodon juveniles were transferred to the ponds.The stocking density was maintain rd at 1/m², 2/m², 3/m² and 4/m² in ponds with two replications. The stocked shrimps were fed with pelleted commercial feed (Saudi-Bangla shrimp feed) at the rate of 10-2% body weight. Essential water quality parameters were recorded weekly and fortnightly for nursery and grow-out operations respectively by direct reading of Water Quality checker. Soil samples were analyzed for each pond using Soil Test Kit. The entire culture period was 105 day; from the mid February to the end of May, 1992.

Achievement/Findings:

The stocking density of PL have a corresponding relationship with inputs required for achieving an optimal production which is essential to successful shrimp farming in terms of pond management system. Results from the present study revealed that intensification in traditional shrimp farming, the production level can substantially be increased with improved management practices and minimal inputs.
