Studies on the Length-weight Relationship and Condition Factor of Macrobrachium Rosenbergii (de Man) in Integrated Pond

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The length-weight relationship and condition factor of freshwater prawn. Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) collected from an integrated pond were studied for nine months. A total of 500 prawns (sex combined) were collected through sampling once a month by using a seine net. The gain in length and weight were recorded on each sampling day. Total length-weight relationship of M. rosenbergii was obtained to be Log W -2.4429 + 3.3719 Log L. The values of co-efficient of correlation, r was found to be 0.957. Standard error Sx and Sy were found to be 1.486 and 16.676 respectively. The calculated t-test also indicated that the correlation between length and weight was significant. The mean value of condition factor K was found to be 10196.

Objectives:

To determine the monthly growth, length- weight relationship and condition factor of M. rosenbergii.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted for nine months from 1 August, 1991 to 30 April, 1992 in a 0.14 ha pond of the Brackishwater Station, Paikqacha, Khulna of the Fisheries Research Institute. One thousand juveniles of M. rosenbergii and fingerlings of different species of carps (280 silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix; 80 catla, Catla catla; 160 rohu, Labeo rohita and 80 grass carp. Ctenopharyngodon idella) were collected from the local fishermen and Government Seed Multiplication Farm, Jessore and were stocked into the pond. Then prawns were randomly sampled from the pond once a month with the help of a seine net. A total of 500 prawns (sexes combined) were sampled and studied during the period of study. Total length to the nearest mm (from tip of rostrum to the end of telson) and weight to the nearest g of each individual sample were measured with the help of a millimeter scale and a sensitive balance respectively. The excess water present on the body of prawn was removed by a clean an d dry cloth just before taking the weight of it.

Achievement/Findings:

Length-weight relationship as obtained in the present study has been presented in this study. The values of Log a and n for the combined sexes of M. rosenberqii ware found to be -2.4429 and 3.3719 respectively. The value of co-efficient of correlation between log length and log weight was 0.957 and the standard errors of Sx and Sy were calculated to be 1.486 and 16.676 respectively. The value of co-efficient of correlation indicated that the relationship between length and weight is significant or not. The calculated value is greater than the tabulated value which indicates that the correlation between length and weight is highly significant. The calculated weight was also plotted in the same graph and an exponential curve was obtained. The curve suddenly ascended from the lower left to the upper right which might be due to much gain in weight with increase in length of the prawn.
