Performance of Oxadiargyl 400sc for Weed Control in Transplanted Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A new pre emergence herbicide Oxadiargyl 400SC was evaluated for the control of mixed weed flora in transplanted rice (Oryza sativa L.) during boro 2006 at Gazipur and Comilla location. Oxadiargyl @ 50, 75 and 100g ai ha^-1were used to perform to select the optimum doses. Cynodon dactylon, Scirpus maritimus, Monochoria vaginalis, Cyperus difformis, Fimbristylis miliacea, Cyperus iria, Marsilea quadrifolia and Alternanthera philoxeroides were the major weeds in the experimental plots. Oxadiargyl 400SC caused light phytotoxicity to rice plants when applied @ 100g ai ha^-1. Pre emergence application of Oxadiargyl 400SC @ 75g ai ha^-1 had minimum population and dry weight of weeds which resulted satisfactory weed control efficiency than other herbicide and doses. Among different treatment, weed free plots produced highest grain yield followed by Oxadiargyl 400SC @ 75g ai ha^-1 which is comparable with other doses of Oxadiargyl 400SC in both locations.

Objectives:

To investigate the efficacy of different doses of Oxadiargyl 400SC against broad spectrum weed species control in transplanted rice.

Methodology:

Field experiment was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur and at Burichang of Comilla district during Boro, 2006 to observe weed growth, weed control efficiency and grain yield of BRRI dhan29. The treatments were, i) Oxadiargyl 400SC @ 50g ai ha^-1, ii) Oxadiargyl 400SC @ 75g ai ha^-1, iii) Oxadiargyl 400SC @ 100g ai ha^-1, iv) Pretilachlor (Rifit) 500EC @ 500g ai ha^-1, v) weed free and vi) control (un weeded). Pretilachlor 500EC @ 500g ai ha^-1 was used to compare the new herbicide. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with 3 replications. Forty days old seedlings of BRRI dhan29 were transplanted on 25^th January, 2006 at 20 cm x 20 cm spacing with 2 seedlings hill^-1 at BRRI farm Gazipur and during 8^th February, 2006 at Burichang, Comilla with same spacing and design. Fertilizer was applied following BRRI recommended dose to obtain maximum yield. Herbicides were sprayed at 4 days after transplanting. In weed free treatment, the plots were kept weed free up to 50 DAT. Weed Control Efficiency (WCE%), Relative Weed Density (RWD), Importance Value of Weed (IVW) and Weed Index (WI) were calculated. Phytotoxicity of the herbicide to rice plants was determined by visual observations (Yellowing leafs, burring leaf tips, stunting growth etc). The degree of toxicity on rice plant was measured.1. No toxicity, 2. Slightly toxicity, 3. Moderate toxicity, 4. Severe toxicity, 5. Toxic (plant kill). Phytoxicity rating was done within a week after application of herbicides. Phytotoxicity was observed three times at 3, 5 and 7 days after application of herbicide and the mean rate was calculated from 10 sample plants of a unit plot. The effect of herbicides on the growing rice was also visually observed and the day of recovery from the toxic effect of herbicide was also noted comparing with manually weeded plants by visual observation. At harvest, yield contributing data were recorded. The data were analyzed following analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique and mean differences were adjusted by multiple comparison test using the statistical program MSTAT-C, V -1.2.

Achievement/Findings:

Oxadiargyl 400SC @ 75g ai ha^-1controlled pre-dominant weed species effectively and produced optimum grain yield in both Gazipur and Comilla region in Bora season. No plant phytotoxicity was observed during the crop growing period due to the application of Oxadiargyl 400SC @ 75g ai ha^-1.
