Feeding Intensity of Tea Mosquito Bug During Daily Rythme

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was made on the feeding intensity of Tea mosquito bug, Helopeltis theivora Waterh. during the daily rythme in the year 1974. This study indicated that the feeding intensity is more accelerated during night than forenoon or afternoon. Observations also revealed that the second leaf of the tea shoot is most vulnerable to feeding and the feeding intensity is associated with the total leaf-area of a shoot having an optimum succulency. The critical injury level to a shoot under field conditions was found to be on an average 65.7 feeding punctures per 41.1 cm. sq. of leaf-area of shoot and a single adult or nymph is capable to inflict critical injury within 16 and 21 hours respectively.

Methodology:

Feeding and laboratory activity of tea mosquito bug was studied in BTRI under laboratory conditions in three phases of daily rythme such as from sunset to sunrise, sunrise to noon and noon to sunset during the year 1974. The feeding intensity of a single or groups of nymph/adult in a space and time were measured by counting the total feeding punchers per shoot with three leaves and a bud during the different test-feeding periods. Critical injury level was thus assessed from each 25 naturally infested shoots from seedling tea, TV1 and B201/39 respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

Feeding intensity of both adults and nymphs was more pronounced during night than the forenoon or afternoon. The intensity of feeding probes per unit space was related with the total leaf area of a shoot having an optimum succulency than the position of a leaf to the shoot. B201/39 with lowest leaf area of the shoot was found more proned to feeding than TV1 and seedling tea having highest leaf area. The critical injury on naturally infested clones and seedling tea was estimated to be 65.7 feeding punctures per 41.1 cm. sq. leaf area of shoot. The average time to inflict critical injury to a shoot by a single adult and nymph were found to be 16 and 21 hours of feeding respectively while the increase of density of nymphs/adults per unit area space decreases the total time for critical injury. Four nymphs per shoot were capable to inflict the critical injury as much as by a single adult within the span of 14-16 hours.
