Occurrence of Parasites in Catla Catla (hamilton) from Rajshahi, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was made on the occurrence of parasites in Catla catla from different water bodies of Rajshahi district from April 2006 to January 2007. A total of 78 specimens of C. catla was examined during the study period and among them 60 fishes were found infected by numerous protozoan and metazoan parasites. The total number of collected parasites were 2420 belonging to eight different parasitic genera. Among them six were ectoparasites and two were endoparasites. The ectoparasites were Trichodina, Myxobolus, Ichthyophthirius, Dactylogyrus, Gyrodactylus, Argulus; and the endoparasites were Eucreadium and Camallanus. The infestations were fluctuated with the change of season and length size of the hosts. The maximum abundance of parasites was recorded in pre-winter in the month of November and minimum in rainy season in July. In length relation, it was observed that the abundance of parasites were the highest in medium size and smaller size fishes, and the lowest in larger fishes.

Objectives:

To investigation the parasitic infestation of the indigenous carp fish, C. catla.

Methodology:

Methods of sample collection: The samples were collected from different fish markets of Rajshahi region. A total of 78 live specimens or freshly dead C. catla was collected from April 2006 to January 2007 as host fish. These fishes were caught from the adjacent beels, rivers and ponds of Rajshahi. After collection, the specimens were brought to the Fisheries Research Laboratory, Department of Zoology, University of Rajshahi for investigation in detail. Measurement and grouping of host fishes: The total length (TL) of individual specimen was measured and the host fishes were divided into three groups based on their length: small (<15 cm), medium (15-25 cm) and large (>25 cm). This grouping was done to depict a clear picture of relationship between length of fish and parasitic infestation. External examination of parasites: At first the fish specimens were sharply observed with naked eye. Then the external surface of the host body including scales, fins, skin, fin base etc. were examined with a magnifying glass for ectoparasites or any kind of lesions. A scrapping was also done on the skin with an unshaped scalpel to collect mucus slime on a petridish for microscopic examination. The gills of the fish were removed from the branchial cavity and placed on a slide for microscopic examination. Internal examination of parasites: The bodies of the host fishes were cut open and examined. The inner surface lining the body cavity, outer surface of the visceral organs and serous membranes were examined for encysted larva. The entire viscera was removed from the body cavity and kept in a physiological saline solution (0.75% NaCl solution). The heart, air bladder, liver, gall bladder, spleen, urinary bladder, gonads, kidneys, peritoneum and mesenteries of the fishes were observed for parasites. Collection of parasites: Parasites were collected from the infected area of the fish for identification. Lice, large nematode and cestode parasites were collected with forceps, needle etc. and small nematodes were collected with a hairbrush. Protozoan parasites present in the mucus or body fluid were collected on a slide with the help of pipette, dropper and needle. Identification of parasites: Parasites were identified under a compound microscope.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that the abundance of parasites was the highest in medium size and smaller size fishes, and the lowest in larger length groups. Considering the above facts, it is concluded that the large size C. catla fishes were most resistant against parasitic infestation.
