Effect of Herbicides on the Growth of Weeds and Yield of Tea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Comparative studies on the effect of hand weeding and chemical weeding on the growth and yield of tea were made in BTRI during the years 1973-75. Four herbicides, namely, Gramoxone @ 1.5 pt., Fernoxone @ 2.0 lb, Dowpon @ 5.0 lb and Reglone @ 3.0 pt. per acre were applied singly and in combination on weeds in tea. Results indicated that none of the herbicides produced phytotoxic effect on the growth of tea bushes. The cocktail of Gramoxone and Fernoxone was found superior to other treatments in controlling mixed stand of monocot and dicot weeds. Moreover, the yield increase in herbicide treated plots ranged from 2.5 to 7.4% over control (i.e. unweeded) and from 3.0 to 7.9% over hand weeding operation.

Objectives:

1. To evaluate the efficacy of chemical and hand weeding in respect of yield increase of tea

2. To determine the phytotoxicity of herbicides to tea plants

Methodology:

A large scale field trial was conducted at Baraoorah tea estate, Sylhet in an area of 0.45 acre of mature seedling tea from 1973-75. The treatments were: T₁= Control (unweeded), T₂= Gramoxone @ 1.5 pt., T₃= Gramoxone @ 1.5 pt.+Fernoxone @ 2.0 lb, T₄= Dowpon @ 5.0 lb+Fernoxone @ 2.0 lb, T₅= Reglone @ 3.0 pt. and T₆= Hand weeding. The herbicides with its respective dose were used in 80 gallons of water per acre. Two rounds of chemical and hand weeding operation were made in June and August, 1973 while one round of each operation were made annually during August, 1974 and 1975. Post operation weed growth and yield of green leaf were recorded throughout the trial period.

Achievement/Findings:

The results revealed that the chemical weeding was superior to hand weeding for the control of mixed weed species in tea plantation. The use of herbicides based on Paraguate (Gramoxone), Diquat (Reglone), 2,4-D (Fernoxone) and Dalapon (Dowpon) singly and as cocktail was safe and conducive for the yield increase of tea. The effectiveness of cocktail spray of Gramoxone @ 1.5 pt. and Fernoxone @ 2.0 lb. per acre was found to excell other treatment in respect of yield increase to the tune of 7.9% over hand weeding and 7.4% over control (unweeded).
