An Investigation of the Reproductive Physiology of Endangered Mud Eel Monopterus Cuchia

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Reproductive physiological characteristics such as external sexual characters, monthly gonado-somatic index (GSI), egg diameter, and fecundity of an endangered fish, mud eel Monopterus cuchia were studied to identify the peak breeding season. The most distinct feature to separate the sex is the shape of genital papilla. The female genital papilla became rounded and swollen and the male papilla was sunken and elongated during April-May. The highest GSI of 6.00±1.67% was observed in mid-May and the lowest of 0.23±0.01% in September. Fecundity was calculated during mid-March to mid-May and it ranged between 132 (body weight 240g, mid-April) to 461 (body weight 380g, mid-May). Ova diameter was measured during the breeding season which ranged between 3.1 (mid-May) to 3.9 mm (mid-April). Relationships between gonad weight and mean ova diameter indicated that ova diameter increased with the increase in gonad weight. Fecundity vs body weight, total length and gonad weight relationships revealed 33%, 25% and 16% variations in fecundity, respectively. However, reproductive physiology information of this experiment indicated the mud eel having peek breading season from late-April to mid-May.

Objectives:

To identify the peak breeding season of M. cuchia.

Methodology:

Animal, study area, and period: Mud eel, Monopterus cuchia were bought from eel sales center that was collected from the seven largest beels namely Phenar beel, Bisundar beel, Panahara Beel, Katia Beel, Khaikuri Beel, Deoramara Beel and tarakanda Beel of Phulpur upazilla under Mymensingh District. Collected fish were stocked in experimental ponds and cistern of the Field Laboratory of Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Myemsingh. Mud eel were reared and sampled every month. Observation of external sexual character: The shape of genital papillae of male and female mud eel were distinguished and light pressure was given on the abdomen by thumb from upward to downward motion of male and females to observe the milt and ova during the breeding periods. The conditions of ready to spawn were noted. Gonado-somatic index (GSI): The fish were weighed, dissected out carefully and the gonads were taken out, placed in petridish, and weighed. The GSI of each female fish was calculated during March 2011 to February 2012. Fecundity and ova diameter: The ovary was taken out carefully, moisture was removed with blotting paper. Eggs were counted directly spreading the eggs on the tray. The weight of the extracted ovary of each fish was recorded in g and egg diameter was measured using slide calipers. The fecundity was plotted against total length, body weight and gonad weight of the fish. Data analysis: The mean values were calculated with the MS Excel computer based software.
