Multivariate Analysis in Sesame (sesamum Indicum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic divergence among 27 genotypes of sesame collected from different part of Bangladesh and abroad were estimated using D² and principal component analysis. The genotypes under study fell into four clusters. The intra-cluster value was maximum in cluster IlI and minimum in cluster I. The inter-cluster distance were larger than the intracluster distance suggesting wider genetic diversity among the genotypes of different groups. The inter-cluster average D² values indicated maximum distance between cluster I and IV followed by between I and III, and between I and II. Thus the genetically diverged genotypes could be used as parents in hybridization programme for getting desirable segregant. Germplasm much in use of these characters would offer a good scope of improvement of the crop through rational selection.

Objectives:

To analyze the genetic divergence of 27 sesame genotypes collected from different parts of Bangladesh and abroad.

Methodology:

Twenty seven genotypes of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute during Kharif, 1992. The unit plot size was 3 rows of 5 meter long and the inter and intra row spacing were 30 and 5 cm, respectively. Fertilizers were used at the rate of 80:65:60:20:4 kg/ha of N,P,K,S and Zn, respectively. The other intercultural operations were done timely to raise the crop uniformly. Observations were recorded from 10 random plants of the middle row in each plot for days to flower, days to maturity, plant height (cm), branches per plant, capsules per plant, seeds per capsule, 1000-seed weight (g) and seed yield per plant (g).
