Allelopathy as a Possible Strategy for Weed Control in Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The field experiment was conducted at Agronomy farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka to investigate the performance of different weed control strategies for controlling weeds growth in mungbean plots during 2008. The experiment was carried out in split-plot design with three replications accommodating the varieties (BARI mug6 and BUmug-2) in main plot and weed control management (no weeding, two hand weeding, herbicide application, Acacia extract, Sorghum extract, Brassica extract and Sunflower extract) in the sub plot. Between the varieties BARI mug6 was better performer in reducing weed density (3.73% at 15 DAS), weed biomass (3.21% & 0.74% at 15 & 45 DAS respectively) and increasing weed control efficiency (8.38% at 15 DAS) than BUmug-2. Allelopathic plant extracts inhibited weeds hut less than hand weeding. Hand weeding and Acacia extract application significantly reduced weed density by 50.39% and 40.16% with their corresponding weed control efficiency by 54% and 50% respectively. Minimum number of weeds at 15 DAS (7.31 weeds m^-2) was found in the interaction of BARI mug6 and hand weeding and at 45 DAS (13.57 weeds m^-2) was in BUmug-2 and hand weeding.

Objectives:

1. To explore the feasibility of using Eucalyptus Eucalyptus camaldulensisi and Acacia (Acacia nilotica) water extracts also as natural herbicides

3. To study their effects on growth and yield of mungbean in comparison with hand weeding and herbicides.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during March to May 2008 to investigate the performance of different weed management for controlling weeds in mungbean. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three replications, keeping a net plot size of 3m x 2.5m, having plant to plant spacing of 10 cm. Two mungbean varieties viz. BARI mug6 and BUmug-2 were used as planting materials for the investigation. Fertilizer was applied @ 20-45-30-1 kg ha^-1 of N-P₂O₅-K₂O-B respectively as basal dose. Weed samples were taken using a quadrat of 1 ml and then oven dried at 70°C for 48 hours for recording dry weed biomass. Herbicide was applied before emergence of crop while water extracts were applied before sowing and at 30 DAS and hand weeding was done at 10 and 30 DAS. The water extracts were prepared by soaking the chopped material of the sorghum, Acacia, sunflower and Brassica plant parts in distilled water in a ratio of 1:2.5 for 72 hours. Then water extracts were sprayed in the respective treatments at the rate of 5 litre 45m^-2 area. Two varieties (BARI mug6 and BUmug-2) were assigned in the main plot and seven weed management (no weeding, two hand weeding, herbicide (basta), Sorghum extract, Acacia extract, Sunflower extract and Brassica extract) in the sub plot. Data were recorded on weed density (no. of weeds m^-2), weed biomass (g m^-2) and weed control efficiency (%). The data collected on different parameters were statistically analyzed to obtain the level of significance using the MSTAT-C computer package program. Mean difference among the treatments were tested with Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of significance.
