A Study on Aquarium Fish Business in Jessore District, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted in Jessore district of south-western Bangladesh with a view to identifying present status of aquarium fish business for a period of six month from September 2012 to February 2013. Only three aquarium shops were recorded and all were located at the heart of Jessore city. Owners of 3 others shops were already closed their business. Only 17 varieties of ornamental fish were recorded to be sold in the surveyed shops belonging to 3 orders- Cypriniformes (52.94%), Perciformes (23.53%) and Siluriformes (23.53%). No fish was found to be sold during winter months i.e. January and February and retailers diverted to other subsidiary business this time. All species were exotic fish and brought from Katabon area of Dhaka city. The highest retail price was found for large silver shark (123.33±40.41 BDT/pair) followed by goldfish (106.67±11.54 BDT/pair) and black moor (105.00±39.05 BDT/pair). Large sucker mouth catfish made the highest profit (38.33±02.89 BDT/pair) to the retails. The study concluded with the following recommendations for the development of aquarium business- production of ornamental fish locally, inclusion of native ornamental species for selling and suitable promotional activities.

Objectives:

To know about available aquarium shops, type and source of aquarium fish, price and profit level and selling status.

Methodology:

Study area and duration: The study was carried out in Jessore district (between 23⁰20’ to 22⁰45’ north and 88⁰90’ to 89⁰30’ east) for a period of 6 months from September 2012 to February 2013. Study methods: A pre-survey was carried out in all the sub-districts (Upazila) of Jessore district to accumulate information of available aquarium shops. Available shops were surveyed weekly to collect necessary information. Aquarium shop owners were interviewed with a prepared questionnaire. The questionnaire was purposively developed, pre-tested and after necessary modifications, this was employed to collect data. Specimen collection and identification: Specimens of aquarium fish were collected and preserved at the laboratory of Department of Fisheries and Marine Bioscience, Jessore University of Science and Technology. The specimens were preserved in 10% buffered formalin solution in leveled plastic jars. Identification was done. Data analyses: Collected data were analyzed by computer software Microsoft Excel 2007 and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 15.00.
