Economically important and delicious fish food Olive barb, Puntius sarana, is well distributed in the River Padma, Rajshahi, Bangladesh. The fish is also adapted in the lakes, beels and other freshwater bodies of Bangladesh. But, so far, very insufficient work was undertaken for its aquaculture development. Knowledge on food and feeding habit is pre-requisite for aquaculture development of any species. Considering the fact, the study on food and feeding habit of P. sarana (Hamilton) from the River Padma was carried out during June, 2011 to January, 2012. A total of 120 specimens of P. sarana were examined on monthly basis for the period of study. The relationship between total length (TL) and the alimentary canal length (ACL), regression method was used. Qualitative and quantitative analyzes of stomach and gut contents of each fish were done by percentage of occurrence and point method, and fullness of stomach was measured by fullness index method. Percentage of occurrence Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Cyanophyceae were almost equally dominant and highest percentage of total point was 22.39 in Cholorophycea and lowest 9.38 were in Crustacea. The highest percentage of fullness (83%) was recorded in August 2011 and the lowest percentage of fullness (55%) was recorded in December, 2012. The highest percentage of vacuity (45%) was recorded in December lowest percentage of vacuity (17%) was recorded in August. The relation between total length and alimentary canal length with standard deviation was 12.32±0.54 and 30.67±0.50 cm. The regression equation is obtained as in total length and alimentary canal length ACL = 4.35 + 0.8966TL. The mean value of total length is positively significant (r = 0.969, p < 0.01) with alimentary canal length. It was observed that the alimentary canal length is larger than total length, which confirmed the omnivore nature of feeding habit of the fish.

1. To know the degree of feeding, feeding habits and feeding in relation between total length and Alimentary canal length of P. sarana.

The study area of the Padma River was from Talaimari ghat of Motihar Thana to Bulonpur ghat of Rajpara Thana of Rajshahi district. The specimens of the selected fish species were collected by fash jal and Jaki jal during June 2011 to January 2012. Immediately after collection, the fishes were preserved in a plastic bottle with 10% formalin to prevent further digestion of food materials. In the laboratory, total length and alimentary canal length was measured in centimeter of each fish and the fishes were dissected vertically from mouth to anus. The stomach contents were analyzed by the point’s method and fullness of stomach was measured by fullness index method (Hynes, 1950), and percentage of frequency by occurrence method. For identification of the food organisms Ward and Whipple (1959) and Prescott (1962 and 1964) were consulted. Relationship between the total length (TL) and alimentary canal length (ACL) was established by using statistical formula: Y = a + bX, where, Y = alimentary canal length (ACL); X = Total length (TL), ‘a’ is the interception on the ordinate and ‘b’ is the regression co-efficient. All the data were subjected to ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) using computer software SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science).

The principal findings of the study were the mean value of total length is positively significant with alimentary canal length. The fish was established to explore the food substance from all the layers of the water body and feeding activity vary with its size. The fish was found to be an omnivore in all the size groups and showed some changes in the pattern of feeding as they grew big. Feeding activity varied with the change of season and feeding actively was more in summer than in winter season.
