Evaluation of Growth and Yield of Chickpea Genotypes for Rainfed Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at the field of Plant Physiology Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 2014-2015 to find out suitable chickpea genotypes for rainfed condition. Fifteen genotypes viz., BD-6300, BD-6301, BD-6302, BD-6309, BD-6312, BD-6744, BD-6745, BD-6772, BD-6773, BD-6774, BD-6775, BD-6776, BD-6778, BD-6757, BARI Chola-5 and BARI Chola-9 were tested. BARI Chola-9, BD-6775, BD-6745, BD-6772 and BD-6309 were found better on the basis of leaf area, chlorophyll content, dry matter accumulation, yield and yield attributes under rainfed conditions.

Objectives:

To find out suitable chickpea genotypes for rainfed condition

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the field of Physiology Division at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 2014-2015. The experimental field belongs to AEZ-28. Soil pH ranged from 6.1 to 6.3 and organic matter content was 0.84%. Fifteen chickpea genotypes/lines namely BD-6300, BD-6301, BD-6302, BD-6309, BD-6312, BD-6744, BD-6745, BD-6757, BD-6772, BD-6773, BD-6775, BD-6776, BD-6778, BARI Chola-5 and BARI Chola-9 were evaluated under rainfed condition. The crop was fertilized with 33-24-45-21-2-1 kg/ha NPKSZnB in the form of Urea, Triple super phosphate, Muriate of potash, Gypsum, Zinc sulphate and Boric acid. All fertilizers were applied as basal during final land preparation. Unit plot size was 3m x 1m. Seeds of each genotype were sown on 17 November, 2014 with 40 cm x 10 cm spacing at 1cm depth of soil. Pre-sowing irrigation was applied for ensuring seed germination and then the crop was grown under rainfed conditions. Intercultural operations and plant protection measures were done when necessary. Soil sample was collected at 15 days interval at 15 and 30 cm depth of soil for determination of moisture. Weather data were recorded during crop period. The plant sample (3 plants/plot) was collected at pre-flowering, pod development and harvesting stage. Leaf area was measured with an automatic leaf area meter (LI 3100 C, LI-CoR, USA). Leaves and other plant parts were dried in an oven at 80⁰C for 72 hours and dry weight was measured. Chlorophyll content was determined by extraction with 80% acetone methods at pod development stage. Days to 50 % flowering and days to maturity were recorded. At maturity, ten plants per plot were selected at random to record data on plant height, branches per plant, pods per plant, seeds per pod, 100-seed weight and seed yield per plant. Collected data were analyzed statistically and means were adjudged by LSD test at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

The results it might be concluded that BARI Chola- 9, BD-6775, BD-6745, BD-6309 and BD-6772 were better under rainfed conditions on the basis of chlorophyll content, growth, dry matter accumulation and yield. The experiment will be continued in next year for better conformation.
