The pesticidal efficacy of fifteen insecticides against tea mosquito bug, Helopeltis theivora Waterh. was screened out in Bilascherra Experimental Farm of BTRI from 1969-74. In these screening tests, Thiodan was found superior to other insecticides in reducing the pest population, while others were more or less equitoxic and remained effective upto 15 days after spray. The gradation of effectiveness (about 90%) of these chemicals upto 15 days after spray was in the order of Thiodan > Agrothion > Perfekthion > Methyl parathion > Malathion.

A series of trials with 15 insecticides both chlorinated hydrocarbon and organophosphorus compounds were tested on tea mosquito bug in seedling and clonal tea at Bilascherra Experimental Farm during 1969-74. The treatments were: T1= Petkolin EC @ 16 fl. oz., T2= Dimecron 100EC @ 16 fl. oz., T3= Nogos 100EC @ 24 fl. oz., T4= Thiodan 35EC @ 24 fl. oz., T5= Malathion 57EC @ 16 fl. oz., T6= DDT 25EC @ 32 fl. oz., T7= Agrothion 50EC @ 32 fl. oz., T8= Ethion 4EC @ 32 fl. oz., T9= Trithion 4EC @ 32 fl. oz., T10= Triazophos EC @ 32 fl. oz., T11= Elsan 50EC @ 32 fl. oz., T12= Perfekthion 30EC @ 32 fl. oz., T13= Anthio EC @ 32 fl. oz., T14= Accothion EC @ 32 fl. oz., T15= Methyl parathion 50EC @ 32 fl. oz. and T16= Control. The insecticides were aprayed at a weekly intervals either with ULV spray with Turbair C13A hand sprayed or with C.P. 201 pressure retaining Knapsack sprayers using 50 gallons of spray fluid per acre. Two/four repeat sprays were made and the rate of infestation was recorded weekly from 50 marked bushes. The overall infestation was assessed by collection shoots (1/12 lbs. in weight) at random from unmarked bushes. The percentage of effectiveness of chemicals were calculated by Abbot's Formula on the basis of infestation.

In a series of large scale field trials during 1969-74, a few effective insecticides as the substitute of DDT have been found for the control of tea mosquito bug. Among these, Thiodan (endosulfan)-a cyclic sulphuirous acid ester is equally effective as DDT but superior top other insecticides as regards pesticidal efficacy and persistency. The incidence of tea mosquito bug may be greatly kept at low level upto a month after two repeat weekly sprays of Thiodan, while other chemicals remained effective up to 15 days only. The gradation of overall effectiveness is in the order of Thiodan > Agrothion > Perfekthion > Methyl parathion > Malathion. All these insecticides except Thiodan should not be used in plucking tea unless the clearance for residue tolerance is obtained from USFDA. if and when these insecticides are to be used in plucking tea, one round of plucking should be discarded.
