Performance of Water Management in the Selected Flood Control and Drainage (fcd) System:socio-economic Information-1999

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study has been taken to determine the existing water management practices in respect of social issues in flood control and drainage (FCD) systems. The study was done by survey work to assess the existing water management practices in FCD system through field visits and interviews using pre-designed questionnaire by interviewing 40 different types of water management stakeholders such as farmer, traders, school teacher, chairman, fisherman, etc. The generated survey data on four major aspects. The main stakeholder of the project are the Farmer, fisherman, bullock cart owner, traders etc. Among the farmers, rich and poor farmers are common and medium farmers were few. There were three types of fisherman, stakeholder of Beel, professional and part time professional. Under SRP, 15 water users group (WUGS) and a water users committee (WUC) covering the whole project area had been formed during 1994-95. These WUOs (Water Users Organization) have been involved in project management in all stages of the project implementation. They are well organized. To operate each of the regulators they formed a regulator operation committee by themselves and thus the regulators operated with a common decision. At present the above WUOs were not functioning properly because the activities of WUOs had been monitored and supervised by BWDB officials and staffs properly.

Under the socio-economic information records that were taken indicated characteristics of respondent, occupation of respondent, socio-economic status of respondent and criteria of stakeholder.
