Development of Suitable Salinity Management Techniques and Their Environmental Impact Assessment on the Coastal Eco-system of Bangladesh:performance of Modern Rice Under Rainfed Condition in Aman Season-1999

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out in Aman season to determine the productivity of BR23 and BRRI dhan34 (an aromatic rice variety) under rainfed condition in the coastal region. For rainwater conservation, 15 cm levee were constructed around the plot. We observed about 880 mm rainfall occurred during the growing season and was sufficient to meet-up crop water requirements for rice in Aman season. There was not much attack of insect-pest during Aman season except a minor attack of rice hispa. Only one spraying was done to control hispa attack. Both BR23 and BRRI dhan34 performed well despite of cyclonic storm. Average yields of BR23 and BRRI dhan34 were 6.2 and 3.9 t/ha, respectively. BRRI dhna34 suffered lodging, but yield was not affected mostly because of early flowering. Farers showed their interest on BRRI dhan34 owing to its higher yield and grain quality. Average yield of local rice in the farmers’ field was about 1.9 t/ha. Most of the local rice varieties suffered lodging and also yield reduction due to the cyclonic storm at the time of flowering to grain filling stages of rice plant in November. But BR23 showed resistance to lodging. During rice growing season, about 880 mm rainfall occurred and water productivity was higher in BR23 followed by BRRI dhan34 and traditional rice varieties.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of different on-farm salinity management techniques and their suitability by using available saline surface and groundwater in the coastal area

Methodology:

An experiment was set up in Aman season to determine the productivity of BR23 and BRRI dhan34 (an aromatic rice variety) under rainfed condition in the coastal region. BRRI recommended agronomic practices i.e., fertilizer dose (22-8-14-9-0 kg/bigha of urea, TSP, MOP, Gypsum and Zinc sulfate), spacing (20 cmx20 cm), plant protection measures were followed to cultivate rice. For rainwater conservation, 15 cm levee were constructed around the plot.
