Development of Suitable Salinity Management Techniques and Their Environmental Impact Assessment on the Coastal Eco-system of Bangladesh :performance of Dry Season Crops-1999

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two experiments were set up in March to develop salinity management techniques and their impact on and productivity. The experiments were set-up in RCBD design with three replications each. One experiment was set-up in normal rice land and the other one was set-up in raised bed to control salinity and water logging, if excessive rainfall occurred. In the first experiment in normal rice land, two treatments were imposed. In treatment one, the land was kept fallow to monitor the rise of salinity and in the second treatment, land was plowed to check salinity build-up in the topsoil. Three crops were grown in the plowed treatment to document the performance on non-rice crops in the dry season. The crops were sesame, mungbean and kangkong. In raised bed experiment, the bed was raised to about 30 cm above the normal soil surface. Two crops, sesame and kangkong were used as test variety in the raised bed experiment. In both the experiments, crops were grown in line with the spacing of 15x20 cm and no fertilizer was used for growing crops. All the crops were damaged due to the prolonged drought in 1999. When the drought period was over and after shower of rain, a leafy vegetable crop Spinach was grown in raised bed to document the production potential of this crop in saline environment. The crop performance was satisfactory.

Achievement/Findings:

All the crops were damaged due to the prolonged drought in 1999. When the drought period was over and after shower of rain, a leafy vegetable crop Spinach was grown in raised bed to document the production potential of this crop in saline environment. The crop performance was satisfactory.
