Studies on the Biology of Pangasius Pangasius (ham.) in Nautral Water of Bangladesh. 1. Distribution and Fishery

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

P. pangasius (Ham) is widely distributed In the rivers and estuaries of Bangladesh. The fish, however, seem to be absent in the Kaptal lake for the last ten years and by no means, they can be said to be abundant In the natural waters of Bangladesh. There are Indications that the population is gradually declining In the rivers and estuaries. Indiscriminate catch of juveniles was observed in the lower parts of the Meghna river and in the estuaries. The peak fishing season that starts from September and lasts till March in the various rivers and estuaries. is related with the lunar cycle and tidal action. Large drag-net and drift-gill-nets are effectively operated for catching large fishes while large seine-net and box-traps are used for juveniles. Both, mechanized and non- mechanized "Chandi boats" are used for fishing P. pangasius in ell over the country. The fish prefers shallow to deep water 'and can tolerate a wide range of salinity (0 to 10 ppt).

Objectives:

To generate information on its distribution and present status of fishery.

Methodology:

Data related to distribution and fishery of P. pangasius were collected from the rivers Padma (at Godagari, Charghat, Rajshahi, Goalunda, C & B ghat, Maowa, Bhagykul and Shariatpur); Mohananda (at Chapai-Nababganj); Jamuna (at Teesta Mukhghat. Bahadurabad ghat, Jaqannathqanj ghat, Serajganj ghat, Bhoapur, Baghabari, Aricha and Nagarbari); Brahmaputra (at Mymensingh and Hossainpur); Teesta (at Ganga chara and Kaonia); Karatoa; Atrai (at Dinajpur and Cherir bandar); Meghna (at Bhairab Bazar. Daudkandi, Shatnol. Chandpur. Hazimara. Kalignaj, Aamgati, Bhola, Hatia, Shashiganj and Monpura); Dhalesheari (at Munshiganj); Someshwari (at Durgapur); Mogra (at Netrokona); Kaonai (at Dharam Pasha); Surma (at Sunamganj and Sylhet); Feni (at Feni); Karnafuli (at Chittagang); lake Kaptai (at Rangamati and Kaptai); Bishkhali (at Patuakhali); Kirtonkhola (at Kaokhali); Bawleshwar. Payra, Tetulia, Pasur, etc. of the coastal belt. at the estuaries of the Meghna, Sundarbansand Dubla island. For the purpose of collection of data, personal visits were made during September 1987 to December 1989 to the fishing and landing centres as described above and the relevant infromation was gathered in a designed proforma where some physico-chemical parameter of the water body were also recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

P. pangasius is found well distributed and abundant in the natural waters of Bangladesh, excepting in the Kaptai lake. to prevent any decline, it is urgently needed to protect the natural nursery and grazing grounds. Moreover, efforts should be made to domesticate the fish in the ponds and to propagate it artifically.
