Redbro ( RbRb ) and Local Naked-neck ( NaNa ) parents were crossed to produce RbRb, RbNa, NaRb and NaNa genotypes. Different haematobiochemical parameters were recorded. Live weights and feed conversion were highest in RbRb, followed by RbNa, NaRb and NaNa genotypes. Blood glucose concentration increased, but cholesterol concentration, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and serum glutamic phosphotransaminase (SGPT ) decreased with advance of age in all genotypes. Serum glutamic oxalotransaminase ( SGOT ) increased in RbRb and decreased in RbNa with age, but in NaRb and NaNa SGOT had no relation with age. Alkaline phosphatase levels were steady in RbRb and RbNa, diminished in NaRb, but elevated in NaNa genotype with increase of age. In RbRb, RbNa anc!NaRb genotypes, TEC increased at older ages. Haemoglobin concentrations increased in RbRb and NaNa, but decreased in RbNa genotypes in harmony with age. Packed cell volume ( PCV ) level increased in RbNa, NaRb and NaNa genotypes, but blood clotting time had no relation with age, except an increased clotting time for RbRb with age. Depleted blood glucose concentration was related to heavier weight of birds. Plasma alkaline phosphatase and haemoglobin also maintained a positive correlation with body weight gain in RbRb and RbNa genotypes. It was concluded that selection for growth and therefore for meat yield on the basis of haematobiochemical parameters could be effective if sufficient selection differentials and reasonable heritability estimates are obtained.

To assess whether they could be used as quick selection criteria

A total of 180 healthy day-old chicks, 45 chicks from each of the 4 genotypes ( RbRb, RbNa, NaRb and NaNa ) were reared to study growth and haematobiochemical status. The chicks of each genotype were again allocated into 3 replications having 15 birds in each replication. Nutrients concentration in diet were as per recommendation of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution. The diets were fed in two phases, starting ( ME 2893.26 Kcal / kg OM, CP 22.25 %, Ca 1.79 %, Av. P 0.41 %, lysine 0.89 % and methionine 0.47 % ) up to 35 days and finishing ( ME 2928.08 Kcal / kg OM, CP 20.49 %, Ca 1.4%, Av. P 0.42 %, lysine 0.42 % and methionine 0.46 % ) between 36 and 63 days of age. Fresh and dry rice husk was used as litter at a depth of about 4 cm. Floor space provided for each bird was 1266 cm2 and were always exposed to a continuous lighting of 23 hours and a dark period of I hour in 24 hours. After taking day old weight, body weight gain and feed intake of birds were recorded replicationwise at 21,42 and 63 days of age to calculate the feed conversion. Blood samples were collected directly from the wing veins of randomly selected 3 birds from each replication at 1; 21, 42 and 63 days of age to study the haematobiochemical parameters. Haematological studies were performed according to Lamberg and Rothestein. The blood glucose and cholesterol were determined using the procedure described. Serum glutamic oxalo- transaminase ( SGOT ) and serum glutamic phosphotransaminase ( SGPT ) concentrations were measured adopting the procedure. Alkaline phosphatase was estimated according to Deneke and Rittersdorf. All the recorded and calculated data were analysed for ANOYA using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with the help of a Computer package program Mstat. Haematobiochemical parameters were analysed using 4 ( genotypes) x 4 ( ages) factorial experiment in a CRD. The haematobiochemical parameters were also regressed on age to assess their pattern of change with age in different genotypes.

The haematobiochemical parameters could be used as the indicators of selection for growth and meat yield providing the heritability of the traits and repeatability is recorded in the successive generations. The Na gene had overall beneficial effect which could be utilized in synthesizing meat type birds to rear under local condition.
