Evaluation of Pump Irrigation System in Some Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted under different pump types in Jessore, Manikgonj and Rangpur area to determine the water use efficiency at farm level irrigation, problems of using the irrigation devices and to identify the profitable cropping patterns in irrigated environment. Three Deep tubewells (DTW), 3 Shallow tube wells (STW) and 3 Low lift pumps (LLP) were selected for the study in each of the 3 selected districts. Information was collected by both experimentation and interviewing the farmers and tube well managers. The average irrigation coverage were 20.9 ha, 4.2 ha and 11.9 ha under DTW, STW and LLP respectively. The water use efficiencies for rice were 88%, 88% and 87% under DTW, STW and LLP respectively and that for potato, wheat and onion were 80%, 102% and 86% respectively. In irrigated environment the most popular cropping pattern was two High Yielding Varieties (HYV) rice followed by any non-rice crops or fallow. Among the different locations the most common and profitable cropping pattern was potato-rice-rice. Farmers in many areas generally do not irrigate non-rice crops due to cost involvement.

Objectives:

1. To study the performance of existing DTWs, STWs and LLPs in the selected locations.

2. To identify the problems of using irrigation devices for irrigating different crops.

3. To evaluate the major cropping patterns under different pump types and to identify the most suitable ones to increase annual crop production and farmers income.

Methodology:

Three locations selected for the study were Manikgonj, Rangpur and Jessore districts. A minimum of three number of pump sets of each type for each location were considered where farmers use intensive motorized pumps of DTWs, STWs and LLPs. Data collection for the number of irrigation devices were made from the secondary sources. Sample farmers were randomly selected from a prepared list of farmers who cultivate rice and non rice crops under the pump units. Soil type and land topographic information were collected i¥ using the prescribed questionnaire. The rainfall data were collected from the respective local weather station. The irrigation water supply was measured in the selected plots in each irrigation using V-Notches. Seepage (S) and percolation (P) data were also recorded from the same plots by installing vertical gauges. Water use efficiency was calculated. Existing major crops grown by the farmers in irrigation units were recorded. Major cropping patterns under each type of irrigation devices in each locations were monitored. Individual crop yield data were collected from the cultivators of the selected irrigation units by using the prescribed survey questionnaire. In some plots crop cut samples were harvested for yield estimation. In this study, all the major costs incurred in the process of crop production during the three seasons were collected. The major cost items were Labor, Bullock, Power tiller, Seeds and seedlings, Manure, Pesticide, Fertilizer, Irrigation fee, Credit and Other costs.

Achievement/Findings:

In irrigated environment, the most popular cropping pattern is two HYV rice followed by fallow or any non- rice crops in flood free areas and one HYV rice followed by one rice crop or local deep water rice in flood prone areas. Among the different locations the most common and profitable pattern was potato-MV rice-T. Aman found under DTW, STW and LLP in Rangpur. This pattern was also found in Jessore under STW and it gave highest BCR. Most farmers prefer STW to DTW because STW has a number of advantages. DTWs should only be used in areas where the ground water table is beyond the suction limit of STWs.
