Scarlet Mite of Tea and Its Control

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In Bangladesh Scarlet mite appears that there is only one species of this mite on tea but no specific determination has yet been made. Both adults and nymphs occur on the under surfaces of the leaves adhering densely near the mid-rib. The affected leaves drop off in acute cases resulting in the defoliation of the bushes. In 19966 many tea estates suffered from the attack of Scarlet mites. Pending evaluation of available acaricides, the tea esrtates were advised to use proprietary lime sulphur, water dispersible powders of Sulphur, Dimecron 100, Morocide, Kelthene and Akar 338 with the provision that lime sulphur could be used on tea of all ages but when other chemicals were used, all the leaf plucked after first and second applications were to be discarded. Subsequently Kelthene was cleared for use to plucking tea. An experiment was therefore undertaken in BTRI for quick screening out of the available pesticides to control the Scarlet mites during 1966. Nineteen different chemicals were tested against this mite in six laboratory trials. The study releaved that Tedion V-18, Akar 338, Kelthene, Mortocide, Dimecron 100, Ethion 4 and Perfekthion were suitable for controlling Scarlet mites.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Three laboratory trials were initiated in BTRI during 1966 with the following treatments: T₁= Control, T₂= Tedion V-18 0.2% F, T₃= Akar 338 0.2%F, T₄= Kelthane 0.2%F, T₅= Morocide 0.2%F, T₆= Ethion 4 0.1 %F, T₇= Perfekthion 0.1%F, T₈=Dimecron 100 0.03%F, T₉= Bidrin 85% 0.03%F, T₁₀= Anthio 0.2%F, T11= Polystan 2.0%F, T12= Thiocron 30EC 0.1%F, T13= Diazinon 60EC 0.125%F, T₁₄= Ortho Dibrom 0.1%F, T₁₅= Basudin (R) 0.1%F, T₁₆= Metasystox (R) 0.1%F, T₁₇= Rogor 40 0.1%F, T₁₈= Thiodan 35EC 0.15%F, T₁₉= Delnav 0.125%F and T₂₀= Ovotran 0.05% F. Tea twigs infested with Scarlet mites were collected and kept in the beakers containing small amount of water for acclimatizing the mites (nymphs and adults) under laboratory conditions for 24 hours. Selected leaves were then treated with the above chemicals and kept in petridishes lined with moistened blotting paper. Thus including control there were eleven treatments which were replicated thrice. The chemicals were applied to the affected leaves with atomizer. Three more laboratory trials with the following different chemicals were initiated during July-August, 1966. All the treatments were replicated thrice. Mites were collected from the field and acclimatized for 14 hrs in the laboratory and treatments were made as described above.

Achievement/Findings:

Results showed that Tedion V-18, Akar 338, Kelthane, Morocide, Dimecron 100, Ethion 4 and Perfekthion achived highly significant control of the mites within 24 hours in the first set of treatments and proved good for controlling the mites. In the second set only Basudin was found effective (64.7%) in controlling the mites. Other chemicals which marginally significant at 1% level were Thiodan, Metasystox, Delnav and Ovotran in order of efficiency. However of the chemicals tried Tedion V-18, Akar 338, Kelthene, Morocide, Ethion 4 and Perfekthion are more effective.
