Effect of Leaf Area on the Strike and Subsequent Growth of Tea Cuttings

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Rooting and growth performances of tea cuttings having two, one, 3/4th, 1/2 and 1/4th of the mother leaf were studied with two clones B201/39 and TV1 in BTRI during 1968-69. Results indicate that single leaf cuttings are the best of all other treatments for propagation and that cuttings with 3/4th size of the mother leaf are also equally good as the standard single leaf cuttings especially in clone TV1. Rootings and growth performances of TV1 are significantly superior to B201/39.

Objectives:

To study the influence of leaf size and number of leaves on the root and growth performance of cuttings of clones B201/39 and TV1

Methodology:

Sandy loam soil with pH 5.0 was selected for the work. The plan of work included the following treatments. T₁-T₅ with clone B201/39 and T₆-T₁₀ with TV1. The treatments were replicated four times under a randomized complete block design. The treatments were: T₁ & T₆= Cutting with single leaf reduced to 1/4th size, T2 & T7= Cutting with single leaf reduced to 1/2th size, T₃ & T₈= Cutting with single leaf reduced to 3/4th size, T₄ & T₉= Single leaf (standard) cutting and T5 & T10= Two leaf cutting. Cuttings with different leaf areas were prepared at random. 50 cuttings were planted in each plot at 4/12'x3' at 6" triangular spacings. Planting was done in late afternoon. The beds were protected by bamboo tarja side walls of 9" height and the top was shaded with standard lath frame. Normal cultural practices were followed. Monthly observations on survival were taken for the first 4 months and on sprouting of axillary buds 3rd and 4th months after planting. Observations on growth performances in respect of shoot and root lengths, stem diameter etc. were recorded at the end of the 6th month after planting.

Results showed that the clones B201/39 and TV1, single leaf cutting was found to be the best of all other treatments in respect of survival of cuttings, sprouting of axillary buds and growth of cuttings. Cuttings with leaf blade reduced to 3/4th of their normal size proved almost as good as the next best treatment in both the clones. in case of TV1, this treatment showed evidence of encouraging the sprouting of the axillary buds. The strike and the growth performances of the cuttings in both the clones diminish with the further decrease in leaf size to 1/2 or 1/4th those of normal. Two-leaf cuttings also did not prove to be of advantages over single leaf cuttings. It was also found that clone TV1 is significantly superior to B201/39 in certain respects only.
