Effect of Plant Population on Physiological and Yield Attributes of Fine Grain Aromatic Rice Mutants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at BINA farm Mymensingh during T. aman season of 2007 to find out the response of fine grain rice mutants to different row spacing. The genotypes used were RM 100-1, RM 100-5, RM 100-16 and Ukunimadhu. The spacing were 20 cm × 20 cm, 20 cm × 15 cm, 15 cm × 20 cm and 15 cm × 15 cm. The highest LA/hill was observed in wider spacing of 20 cm × 20 cm while the highest LA/m² was recorded in closer spacing of 15 cm × 15 cm. Similar results were also observed in case of TDM production and LAI. The higher CGR was observed in closer spacing. The highest LA and LAI were recorded in RM 100-16. Results showed that the number of tillers/hill, grains/panicle and grain weight/hill decreased with decreased plant spacing where as reverse trend was observed in grain yield per unit area. The highest grain yield was observed in 15 cm × 15 cm spacing which was statistically indifference with 15 cm x 20 cm spacing.. The highest grain yield was recorded in RM 100-5 (3.34 t/ha) followed by RM 100-1 (3.29 t/ha) and Ukunimadhu (3.18 t/ha) with same statistical rank. The yield was higher in those genotypes because of higher number of tillers, grains/panicle and higher grain weight/hill.

Objectives:

To find out the response of fine grain rice mutants to different row spacing.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at BINA farm Mymensingh during T. aman season of 2007 to find out the response of fine grain rice mutants to different row spacing. The genotypes used were RM 100-1, RM 100-5, RM 100-16 and Ukunimadhu. The spacing were 20 cm × 20 cm, 20 cm × 15 cm, 15 cm × 20 cm and 15 cm × 15 cm. The experiment was laid out in a Split-plot design with three replications where variety was placed in the main plot and plant spacing in the sub-plot. The unit plot size was 2 m × 3 m. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 50, 80 and 60 kg/ha of urea, TSP and MP. TSP and MP were applied during final land preparation. Urea was applied in two splits, at 15-d and 45-d after transplanting. Plant samples were collected two times at 60 and 75 DAT for determining crop growth rate (CGR), leaf area (LA), leaf area index (LAI) and total dry matter (TDM). Cultural operations, such as weeding and pest control were done as and when necessary. Yield and yield contributing characters were recorded at harvest.
