Effect of Hill Spacing and Level of Nitrogen on the Yield and Yield Components of Transplant Aman Rice Cv. BINAdhan-4

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of hill spacing and N levels on the yield attributes and yield of transplant aman rice cv. Binadhan-4. The experiment comprised four spacings, viz. 10, 15, 20 and 25 cm and four N levels viz. 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg ha^-1. The number of total and effective tillers hill^-1, grains panicle^-1, grain and straw yields increased with increasing hill spacing and N level. The highest number of total, effective and non-effective tillers hill^-1 and grains panicle^-1 was observed in the widest spacing of 25 cm followed by 20 cm while the highest grain and straw yields were observed in 20 cm hill spacing. In contrast, the closest spacing of 10 cm, produced the lowest grain yield. The highest number of effective tillers hill^-1, grain and straw yields were observed in the dose of N, 120 kg ha^-1. In regard to interaction effect of spacing and N level, the highest number of total and effective tillers hill^-1 were observed in widest spacing of 25 cm with 120 kg N ha^-1 and the highest grain yields were observed in 20 cm spacing with 120 kg N ha^-1. The lowest values of the above parameters were recorded in the narrowest hill spacing, 10 cm with 0 kg N ha^-1.

Objectives:

To study the effect of hill spacing and nitrogen levels on growth, and yield of transplant aman rice cv. Binadhan-4 and to find out appropriate combination of hill spacing and nitrogen level for higher yield of transplant aman rice cv. Binadhan-4.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during the period from July to November 2004 to investigate the effect of hill spacing and nitrogen levels on yield attributes and yield of transplant aman rice cv. Binadhan-4. The experiment comprised of four hill spacings viz. 10 cm, 15 cm, 20 cm and 25 cm, and four nitrogen levels viz. 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N ha^-1. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 10 m² (4.0 m x 2.5 m). Nitrogen was applied in the form of urea as per treatment. One third of urea was applied at the time of final land preparation and the rest amount was top dressed in two equal installments on 20 and 45 days after transplanting. A fertilizer dose of 110-120-60-5 kg ha^-1 of triple superphosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively was applied at the time of final land preparation. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on characters were recorded from the five plants of the sample hill except the grain and straw yields. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

The spacing of 25 cm x 20 cm with 120 kg N ha^-1 combination appears to be the best among the treatments regarding yield and yield attributes for Binadhan-4 in Transplant Aman season under the AEZ-9, which can be practiced in this area for better benefits.
